Based on those he left behind, de la Rochefoucauld was a keen observer of the human condition. Writing during the reign of Louis XIV, he was able, in just a few words, to capture the highs and lows of what makes people tick.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve only recently discovered them, but I&#8217;m hooked. Well recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courrierinternational.com\/article\/vu-ditalie-louis-xiv-devient-louis-14-ces-musees-francais-qui-renoncent-aux-chiffres-romains\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Italian press<\/a> (and some more reactionary conservatives in France) have gotten all worked up over the news that some people people were replacing the traditional Roman numerals in king&#8217;s names (Louis XIV) with Arabic numerals (Louis 14).<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"2\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33680\"><a href=\"void(0)\" role=\"button\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33680-2\">2<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33680-2\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" data-mfn=\"2\">Somewhat embarrassingly, we Americans had our own number &#8220;scandal&#8221; of sorts not too long ago. In a survey &#8220;designed to tease out prejudice[s]&#8221;, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iflscience.com\/editors-blog\/56-percent-of-americans-dont-think-we-should-teach-arabic-numerals-in-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">56% of those surveyed<\/a> said we should not be teaching Arabic numerals in American schools \ud83d\ude41 \u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lorientlejour.com\/article\/1255952\/louis-14-ou-louis-xiv-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it is true that the soon-to-reopen Mus\u00e9e Carnavalet<\/a> (like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lebonbon.fr\/lyon\/news\/metropole-lyon-louis-14-polemique\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Louvre and British Museum<\/a> before them) is using the updated Louis 14 in a selection of materials designed to improve access for visitors with disabilities, there is no wholesale replacement planned and the convention of using Roman numerals in the names of kings and emperors stands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"modern-footnotes-list modern-footnotes-list--show-only-for-print\"><li><span>1<\/span><div><em>service member, soldier, member of the military<\/em><\/div><\/li><li><span>2<\/span><div>Somewhat embarrassingly, we Americans had our own number &#8220;scandal&#8221; of sorts not too long ago.
