Like many countries at the time, French colonial trade relied on <strong>l&#8217;esclavage<\/strong><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"8\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33720\"><a href=\"void(0)\" role=\"button\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33720-8\">8<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33720-8\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" data-mfn=\"8\"><em>slavery<\/em><\/span>. In 1791 though, the leaders of the new Republic were among the first to officially abolish slavery. Following 1789&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/a-revolutionary-calendar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>D\u00e9claration des droit de l&#8217;homme et du citoyen<\/strong><\/a>, they declared that &#8220;<strong>tout homme est libre en France, et que, quelle que soit sa couleur, il y jouit de tous les droits de citoyen<\/strong>&#8220;<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"9\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33720\"><a href=\"void(0)\" role=\"button\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33720-9\">9<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33720-9\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" data-mfn=\"9\"><em>every man is free in France, and, regardless of his color, he benefits from all the rights of citizenship<\/em><\/span>. Just over 10 years later (in 1802) Napoleon would undue the abolish and bring slavery back to French colonies. <\/div>\n<h3>Le 8 mai<\/h3>\n<p>Saturday was one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/faire-le-pont-may-holidays-in-france\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the many May holidays in France<\/a> and President Macron participated in another commemoration. Over the weekend he made his way to the Arc de Triomphe<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"10\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33720\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33720-10\">10<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33720-10\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"10\">Another legacy of Napol\u00e9on&#8217;s<\/span> to mark the 76th anniversary of the end of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/its-spring-and-inspiration-is-in-the-air\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>la Deuxi\u00e8me Guerre Mondiale<\/strong><\/a>. Like last year, the day&#8217;s traditional parades and celebrations were muted due to the on-going Covid-19 crisis, but you can learn more about the day and &#8220;follow&#8221; the events <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sortiraparis.com\/actualites\/a-paris\/articles\/217257-8-mai-a-paris-suivez-en-direct-la-commemoration-de-la-victoire-a-paris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>An update<\/h3>\n<p>Last year in<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-culture-architectural-oddities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> a post about interesting oddities of French architecture<\/a> I told you about Paris&#8217;s <strong>fa\u00e7ades factices<\/strong>.
