The urgency really became apparent after a part of a wall of<em> Le Cimeti\u00e8re des Saints-Innocents,<\/em> the largest and oldest cemetery located in the city, collapsed in 1774, sending bodies of medieval Parisians into the streets to the <em>horreur\u00a0<\/em>of current residents. Not to mention that it was located near the market <em>Les Halles,\u00a0<\/em>so it was less than an ideal <em>emplacement<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\">location<\/span>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After that, nightly wagons<em> vid\u00e9<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"2\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722-2\">2<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722-2\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"2\">emptied<\/span><\/em> the cemeteries of Paris and deposited the remains underground, along miles of <em>passages souterrains<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"3\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722-3\">3<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722-3\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"3\">subterranean passages<\/span><\/em> that were former <i>carri\u00e8res de Paris<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"4\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722-4\">4<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722-4\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"4\">quarries of Paris<\/span><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1793, the Val-de-Gr\u00e2ce hospital doorkeeper Philibert Aspairt wandered into the catacombs one night and got lost. <em>Pourquoi? Personne sait<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"5\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722-5\">5<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722-5\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"5\">Why? Nobody knows.<\/span><\/em>. He was found <em>d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"6\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722-6\">6<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722-6\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"6\">deceased<\/span><\/em> 11 years later and entombed in the location where his body was found. <em>Terrifiant!<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"7\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722-7\">7<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722-7\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"7\">Creepy!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>During World War II, Parisian members of the French Resistance used the catacombs and the passages underneath Paris and planned and led insurrections towards the liberation of Paris. The Nazis also set up secret bunkers underneath Paris.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, urban explorers known as <em>cataphiles<\/em> illegally enter and explore the 170 miles of subterranean passages that criss-cross the city, similarly to a <em>rayon de miel<\/em><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"8\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722-8\">8<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722-8\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"8\">honeycomb<\/span> (of which includes 1.1 miles of the ossuary). There is even a special subset of police who patrol the entrances to the mines to prevent people from accessing them, and they are known as &#8216;<em>cataflics<\/em>&#8216; (<em>flic<\/em> being a slang word in French for the police).<\/p>\n<p>In 2004, police discovered a fully equipped movie theater in an area of the catacombs. A giant screen, alcohol, plush seats, and even a kitchen were discovered. When the police returned for a formal investigation, everything had been removed except for a note that read &#8220;<em>ne cherchez pas<\/em>&#8221; &#8211; do not search.<\/p>\n<p>A few years ago I visited the catacombes for the first time, and I remember my <em>battement de coeur<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"9\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722-9\">9<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_33722-9\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"9\">heartbeat<\/span><\/em> quickening as I saw the sign at the entrance after climbing down the equivalent of a 5 story building:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>\u00ab Arr\u00eate ! C&#8217;est ici l&#8217;empire de la mort. \u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">&#8220;Stop!
