It’s a big week for some of the world’s most recognized monuments. After last week’s celebrations commemorating Bastille Day\/le 14 juillet<\/a>, there’s more big news this week concerning the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. Let’s check out these monumental updates.<\/p>\n

Let’s start at the top … or as close to the top as you can get in Paris!<\/p>\n

After taking center stage last week as part of the July 14th <\/a>feux d’artifices<\/a>,<\/strong> la Tour Eiffel, the tallest structure<\/a> in \u00cele-de-France<\/a>, reopened to tourists\u00a0le vendredi 16 juillet<\/strong>.1<\/a><\/sup>Friday, July 16<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The end of the 9-month closure, the longest since World War II,\u00a0\u00e9tait un vrai bol d’air pour les touristes et le personnel<\/b><\/a>.2<\/a><\/sup>was a real breath of fresh air for tourists and employees<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

While capacity will be reduced, and masks and proof of vaccination will be required<\/a>, everything about the tower including the ascenseurs hydrauliques<\/strong>3<\/a><\/sup>hydraulic elevators<\/em><\/span>, had to be made ready to accommodate the tourists.<\/p>\n

Speaking of the Eiffel Tower … <\/strong><\/p>\n

Back in May, the company Energy Observer<\/a>, in partnership with Fran\u00e7ais Air Liquide<\/a>, demonstrated the future of energy by lighting the tower up with a light show aliment\u00e9e par de l\u2019hydrog\u00e9n\u00e9 d\u00e9carbon\u00e9<\/strong><\/a>.4<\/a><\/sup>powered by decarbonated hydrogen<\/em><\/span> You can check it out here<\/a>.<\/div>\n

L’Arc de Triomphe<\/h3>\n

Paris’s other iconic monument, l’Arc de Triomphe, is about to get a makeover of sorts.<\/p>\n

Timed to fit between the end of the Tour de France5<\/a><\/sup>Retrouvez les highlights and see who won here<\/a>.<\/span> and the commemorations of le 11 novembre<\/a>, a team representing the artist Cristo – who wrapped le Pont Neuf in fabric back in 1985 – will use 3,000 meters of red cord to wrap the arch in 25,000 meters of silvery blue fabric.<\/p>\n

From le 18 juillet,<\/strong> “[t]rois \u00e9quipes se relaieront 24 heures sur 24 pour achever [l’installation]. […] Quant au d\u00e9montage il devra se faire en six jours<\/b>“<\/a>.6<\/a><\/sup>July 18th, three teams will work 24\/7 to complete the installation. As for the removal, it should take just 6 days.<\/em><\/span> The final work will be on view\u00a0du samedi 18 septembre au dimanche 3 octobre 2021<\/strong><\/a>.7<\/a><\/sup>from Saturday September 18 to Sunday October 3, 2021<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

There was a fun little addition to last week’s Bastille Day celebrations on the Champs-Elys\u00e9es when un soldat fran\u00e7ais a fait sa demande en mariage avant le defile du 14 juillet! <\/b>9<\/a><\/sup>a French soldier delivered his mariage proposal before the July 14th parade<\/em><\/span> You can see the proposal \u2026 and the crowds reaction \u2026 here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/div>\n

A monumental gaffe<\/h3>\n

The 74th edition of the Cannes Film Festival ended Saturday with the traditional distribution of awards. The ceremony generally ends with the awarding of the Palme d’Or<\/a> to the meilleur film but this year it started that way when the Jury president, Spike Lee, accidently announced the winner pretty much right off the bat!
