The 2020 (2021) Olympic Games in Tokyo were good for Team France. Les Bleus ended the two weeks with a total of 33 m\u00e9dailles<\/strong>1<\/a><\/sup>medals<\/em><\/span>, putting l\u2019\u00e9quipe de France<\/strong>2<\/a><\/sup>the French team<\/em><\/span>\u00a08th in the overall medal rankings3<\/a><\/sup>even though their total of 33 medals was fewer than other countries class\u00e9<\/strong>\/ranked<\/em> lower. Overall rankings as outlined here<\/a> are based on the number of m\u00e9dailles d\u2019or<\/strong>\/gold medals<\/em>, then argent<\/strong>\/silver<\/em>, et bronze.<\/span>. But the Tokyo games are over and so now on to Paris \u2026 for 2024.<\/p>\n

France represents in Tokyo<\/h3>\n

In overall medal count, France\u2019s 33 m\u00e9dailles<\/strong> puts them in 10th place. Les Bleus took the most medals in\u00a0judo<\/strong> (8),escrime<\/strong> (5), and\u00a0voile<\/strong>\u00a0(3). They took gold in judo<\/strong> and escrime<\/strong> as well as 5 other sports (handball, volley-ball, aviron, karat\u00e9, et tir<\/strong>)4<\/a><\/sup>See the linked posts at the end of this blog for a review of French Olympic sports vocabulary for the summer and winter games.<\/span><\/p>\n

After initially beating them in their first match<\/a>, the French men\u2019s basketball team ultimately lost to the US and won silver in basketball (the women\u2019s team took bronze). See full results here<\/a> or read more over at Le Parisien<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Paris 2024<\/h3>\n

With Tokyo in the history books, attention turns (for the summer games, at least) to Paris and 2024. The organizers have already been working hard and are hoping to make these next French games5<\/a><\/sup>France has previously hosted<\/a> 5 Olympic Games (Summer 1900 – Paris, 1924 – Paris; Winter 1924 – Grenoble, 1968 – Chamonix, and 1992 – Albertville)<\/span>\u00a0the first carbon-neutral games.<\/p>\n

One way that the organizers are planning to do this – and to keep costs down – is to make use of existing locations and keep construction to a minimum. \u201c[I]maginer un terrain de beach-volley devant la tour Eiffel, ou encore l’esplanade des Invalides transform\u00e9e en stand de tir-\u00e0-l’arc. \u2026L’\u00e9quitation se d\u00e9roulera au ch\u00e2teau de Versailles<\/strong><\/a>\u201d6<\/a><\/sup>Imagine a beach-volleyball court in front of the Eiffel Tower, or the esplanade of the Invalides transformed into an archery stand. \u2026 Horse riding will take place at Versailles.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Tony Estanguet<\/a>, pr\u00e9sident du Comit\u00e9 d’organisation des Jeux olympiques et paralympiques de Paris-2024<\/strong>7<\/a><\/sup>President of the Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris-2024<\/em><\/span> says that these efforts – which will see events take place not just in Paris, but also have events in Marseille, in Lille, and even in Tahiti – \u00a0will \u201cpermet de diviser par deux les \u00e9missions carbone g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9es par ces Jeux<\/strong>\u201d<\/em>8<\/a><\/sup>Allow carbon emisssions to be cut in half<\/em><\/span> while “<\/em>mettre plus de sport dans le quotidien des Fran\u00e7ais” et “renforcer la place du sport dans la soci\u00e9t\u00e9<\/strong>“.<\/em>9<\/a><\/sup>bringing more sport into the daily lives of the French and reinforcing the role of sport in society<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

A pop culture update<\/h3>\n

I was pleased to learn that the great French series Dix pour cent (Call my agent)<\/a> is coming back for a fifth season and that there is a movie in the works<\/a>. While both are still some time away, in the meantime you can catch series break out star Camille Cottin<\/a> alongside Matt Damon in the new Marseille-based movie Stillwater.<\/p>\n
