In France, that means <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/la-rentree-back-to-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>la rentr\u00e9e<\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0Here in the US, September is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/conferencesevents\/celebrationweeks\/card\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Library Card Sign-up Month<\/a>. <strong>Les biblioth\u00e8ques<\/strong><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_34130\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_34130-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_34130-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\"><em>Libraries<\/em>; not to be confused with <em>les librairies<\/em> which are <em>bookstores<\/em><\/span>\u00a0are amazing places where you can find all sorts of wonderful content \u2026 including, at many, access to Transparent Language\u2019s online learning portal. Learn more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transparent.com\/libraries\/find-transparent-language-online.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Les proverbes fran\u00e7ais<\/h3>\n<p>Watching the great French movie <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/silence-on-tourne\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Le fabuleux destin d\u2019Am\u00e9lie Poulain<\/a> the other day reminded me of a back-to-school tradition from my days learning French.<\/p>\n<p>I had <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-language-and-culture-at-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>une prof de fran\u00e7ais<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0who liked to teach us <strong>un nouveau proverbe<\/strong><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"2\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_34130\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_34130-2\">2<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_34130-2\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"2\"><em>a new proverb<\/em>; don\u2019t be confused by the final -e on <em>proverbe<\/em>, it is a masculine noun<\/span> each week. Since many proverbs rely on historical and cultural context, they are a great way to flex your language muscle \u2026 and (<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Xu7vS_Gwucc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at least according to Gina<\/a>) \u201c<strong>celui qui conna\u00eet bien les proverbes ne peut pas \u00eatre compl\u00e8tement mauvais<\/strong>\u201d<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"3\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_34130\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_34130-3\">3<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_34130-3\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"3\"><em>Those (the one) that know(s) their\/the proverbs well, can\u2019t be all\/completely bad<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the five proverbs from the film clip plus two more from my school days.<\/p>\n<table width=\"672\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"336\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-music-spring-is-in-the-air\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Une hirondelle ne fait pas le printemps.<\/strong><\/a><\/td>\n<td width=\"336\"><em>One swallow doesn\u2019t make the spring.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"336\"><strong>L\u2019habit ne fait pas le moine.<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"336\"><em>Clothes don\u2019t make the monk (don\u2019t judge a book by its cover)<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"336\"><strong>A bon chat, bon rat.<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"336\"><em>A good cat requires a good mouse.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"336\"><strong>Petit\u00a0\u00e0 petit, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-vocabulary-for-the-birds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">l\u2019oiseau<\/a> fait son nid.<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"336\"><em>Little by little, the bird makes it\u2019s nest.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"336\"><strong>Pierre qui roule, n\u2019amasse pas mousse.<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"336\"><em>A rolling stone gathers no moss.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"336\"><strong>C\u0153ur qui soupire n\u2019a pas ce qu\u2019il desire.<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"336\"><em>The heart that sighs doesn\u2019t have what it desires.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"336\"><strong>\u00a0Qui se ressemble, s\u2019assemble.<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"336\"><em>\u00a0Those that look alike, gather (Birds of a feather flock together)<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"336\"><strong>\u00a0C\u2019est la fin qui couronne l\u2019\u0153uvre.<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"336\"><em>It\u2019s the end that crowns the work (The ends justify the means)<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>What other French proverbs do you know?
