So let&#8217;s take a deeper diver into those towns that are both in the <em>la Vall\u00e9e de la Dordogne\u00a0<\/em>(The Dordogne Valley<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_34264\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_34264-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_34264-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\">after the Dordogne river that flows through here<\/span>)<\/p>\n<p><em>Rocamadour\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Named after <em>r\u00f2ca (cliff in Catalan) <\/em>and St. Amador (whose body was supposedly found entombed within the rocks) Rocamadour is probably best known as a thousand year old pilgrimage site with multiple churches built into the cliffs. It&#8217;s truly a spectacular site and worthy of a visit, with stories of kings and monks flocking to the city, and a remnant of a sword jutting from the cliffs in a true &#8220;Excalibur&#8221; fashion &#8211; except legend states this sword, called Durendal, was wielded by Roland, a legendary knight to Charlemagne.<\/p>\n<p>Rocamadour has actually been called home for much longer than simply a millenium though, with evidence from the Old Stone Age shown in the cave drawings in the nearby <i>Grotte des Merveilles<\/i>.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"2\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_34264\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_34264-2\">2<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_34264-2\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"2\">Caves of Wonder<\/span>, and then again with evidence from the Bronze Age, followed by the Iron Age.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34290\" style=\"width: 778px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34290\" class=\"wp-image-34290 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/11\/IMG-3324-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/11\/IMG-3324-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/11\/IMG-3324-263x350.jpg 263w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/11\/IMG-3324-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/11\/IMG-3324-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/11\/IMG-3324-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-34290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by me, Rocamadour.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>Saint-Cirq-Lapopie\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Saint-Cirque-Lapopie is similar to Rocamadour since it is also nestled on top of a rocky cliff. But unlike Rocamadour, it is designated as one of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Les_Plus_Beaux_Villages_de_France\"><em>Les Plus Beaux Villages de France <\/em><\/a>(The Most Beautiful Villages of France), which is an association that began in the 80&#8217;s to attract tourists to small, historic, and charming villages. Supposedly being designated one of the most beautiful villages of France increases tourist traffic by 10 to 50%, and villages need to meet specific criteria and then apply to be recognized.<\/p>\n<p>Saint-Cirque-Lapopie boasts a total of 15 residents, an XIth century medieval castle, prehistoric paintings in the<em> Pech Merle<\/em> cave, and winding streets and homes that were built between the XIIth and XVIth centuries.
