Today is the day<\/h3>\n

Interestingly, Josephine Baker is not actually moving to the Pantheon. Her remains are to remain in Monaco \u201co\u00f9 elle est enterr\u00e9e pr\u00e8s de son mari et d\u2019un de ses enfants<\/strong><\/a>\u201d2<\/a><\/sup>where she is buried near her husband and one of her children<\/em><\/span>. A few weeks back, Bridgette shared some useful vocabulary with us for trips to the bank. It got me thinking of two common slang terms for\u00a0l\u2019argent<\/strong> that you\u2019re more likely to hear\u00a0dans la rue<\/a> qu\u2019\u00e0 la banque<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The first is\u00a0le fric<\/strong>. A term which comes, according to this article<\/a>, from the words \u201cfricot ou de fricandeau, qui signifiaient rago\u00fbt de viande<\/strong>\u201d7<\/a><\/sup>fricot or fricandeau, which mean a meat stew<\/em><\/span>,\u00a0fric<\/strong> is commonly to replace\u00a0argent<\/strong> in expressions like \u201cT\u2019as du fric?<\/strong>\u201d8<\/a><\/sup>Do you have any money\/cash?<\/em><\/span>, or \u201cCe type est riche. Il a plein de fric!<\/strong>\u201d9<\/a><\/sup>That guy is rich. He has tons of money!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Pognon<\/strong> is another term for\u00a0money<\/em> or\u00a0cash<\/em>. It may come, according to the same article, from the French verb poigner<\/strong> –\u00a0to grasp in the fist; to grab.<\/em> \u201cPierre a une tonne de pognon depuis qu\u2019il a vendu sa baraque<\/strong>.\u201d10<\/a><\/sup>Peter has a ton of cash\/money since he sold his house<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

While we\u2019re at it, here are a couple of other common expressions related to money (or the lack thereof!): \u00eatre plein aux as<\/em><\/strong>11<\/a><\/sup>to be loaded; to have a lot of money; to be flush with cash<\/em><\/span>;<\/em> \u00eatre fauch\u00e9<\/strong>12<\/a><\/sup>to be broke<\/em><\/span>; ne pas avoir un rond<\/strong>13<\/a><\/sup>to be broke;<\/em>\u00a0lit. to not even have a coin<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Speaking of vocabulary, I came across a great new word this week in an article from lefigaro.fr\u00a0Cinq anglicismes \u00e0 bouter hors de la langue<\/strong> fran\u00e7aise<\/strong><\/a>14<\/a><\/sup>Five English terms to kick out of the French language<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n

The DGLFLF15<\/a><\/sup>See the previous post Fake News <\/em>(below) to learn more about the DGLFLF<\/span> proposes the term divulg\u00e2cher <\/strong>(a blend of the verbs\u00a0divulger<\/strong> (to reveal<\/em>) and\u00a0g\u00e2cher\u00a0<\/strong>(to spoil)\u00a0<\/em>to replace\u00a0spoiler<\/em> when talking about your favorite\u00a0s\u00e9rie t\u00e9l\u00e9vis\u00e9e\u00a0<\/strong>(Like Dix pour cent<\/em><\/a> which was recently honored with an international Emmy!<\/a>).<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not sure if it will take off or not, but it sure seems like a clever alternative to me!<\/p>\n
