But, all &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/tag\/nicolas-chauvin\/\">chauvinistic<\/a>&#8221; considerations aside (no doubt more suitable for the purpose of rehashing the &#8220;intricacies&#8221; of, say, some highly &#8220;theatrical&#8221;\u00a0<strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/flashback-coup-de-boule-4-years-ago-deja\/\">match final<\/a><\/em><\/strong><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/flashback-coup-de-boule-4-years-ago-deja\/\">de la Coupe du Monde de la FIFA<\/a><\/em><\/strong>), it is important to point out that the French were able to establish\u00a0<em><strong>un op\u00e9ra<\/strong> <\/em>which was<em><strong>fran\u00e7ais <\/strong><\/em>in its very own right.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In fact, although this assertion may come as a \u00a0a little surprise to some, French opera was widely viewed, for a long time throughout Europe, as more <em><strong>raffin\u00e9 <\/strong><\/em>than its comparatively older, more &#8220;colorful&#8221;, yet often frivolous, verging on the\u00a0edge of the &#8220;<strong><em>buffonesque<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;,\u00a0<em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/\">Italiano<\/a><\/strong><\/em> counterpart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Lully, an Italian by birth, and pioneer -&#8220;Godfather-style&#8221;-\u00a0of the French Opera (read some of the &#8220;gory details&#8221; below) was to eventually develop a more specifically &#8220;French style&#8221; of Opera, which, <em>pour la petite histoire<\/em> (as a side anecdote),\u00a0would posthumously instigate two notable <\/strong><strong>clashes on the French artistic and literary scenes: &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musebaroque.fr\/Documents\/diderot_lully_rameau.htm\/\"><em>La<\/em> <em>Querelle des Lullystes et des Ramistes<\/em><\/a>&#8220;, the quarrel that\u00a0<\/strong><strong>pitted Lully&#8217;s own disciples and followers against those of Jean-Philippe Rameau (a Frenchman whose works were, ironically, often deemed &#8220;too Italian&#8221; in comparison to Lully&#8217;s.) The second quarrel was that of &#8220;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/agora.qc.ca\/Documents\/Jean-Philippe_Rameau--La_querelle_des_bouffons_par_Helene_Laberge\/\">la Querelle des bouffons<\/a><\/em>&#8220;, in which -fittingly enough, given its name- a Jean-Jacques Rousseau was oh&#8217; so &#8220;passionately&#8221; involved!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">* * *<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">That being said, one can also establish, with solid historical evidence at hand, that the inception of French opera owes a tremendous debt to the early Italian school.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>Sans l&#8217;ombre d&#8217;un doute<\/em><\/strong> (without the shadow of a doubt),\u00a0more than anybody else, including the less noted\u00a0<strong>Pierre Perrin<\/strong>, pioneer of what is\u00a0today\u00a0<strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.operadeparis.fr\/cns11\/live\/onp\/\">l&#8217;Op\u00e9ra national de Paris<\/a><\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Jean-Baptiste Lully<\/strong> ought to be considered by all, hands-down, as <em><strong>le fondateur<\/strong> <\/em>of French opera.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Although he was <strong><em>d&#8217;origine italienne<\/em><\/strong> (of\u00a0Italian background), or perhaps &#8220;because&#8221; of his Italian origin, &#8220;<strong>Giovanni Battista Lulli<\/strong>&#8221; was able to swiftly ascend the thorny throne of\u00a0<strong><em>les<\/em><\/strong> <em><strong>compositeurs<\/strong> <\/em>(the composers) who set shop at the royal court of <strong><em>le Roi-Soleil<\/em><\/strong><em>, <\/em>the &#8220;Apollo-wanna-be&#8221;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/lhomme-au-masque-de-fer-iron-man-pour-les-ironiques\/\"><em>Louis XIV<\/em><\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/languelangage\/\">Moli\u00e8re<\/a><\/strong>or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/la-fontaines-le-corbeau-et-le-renard-a-fable-of-a-literally-outfoxed-crow\/\">La Fontaine<\/a><\/strong> would both find out the hard way, Lully was elevated to this lofty musical rank thanks to a few treacherous &#8220;Godfather&#8221;\u00a0<em><strong>combines<\/strong> <\/em>(tricks.) To all his foes and competitors, he never shied away from making them &#8220;<strong><em>des offres qu&#8217;ils ne pouvaient lui refuser<\/em>&#8220;<\/strong>(&#8220;offers which they could not refuse to him&#8221;)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">He very much enjoyed<em><strong> l&#8217;aile protectrice<\/strong><\/em> (the protecting wing) of the so-called &#8220;<strong>Italian <em>clique<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; that dominated the court. Headed by the astute\u00a0<strong>cardinal Mazarin<\/strong>, whose birth name is actually <strong>Mazarini <\/strong>or <strong>Mazzarini<\/strong>,the roots of this powerful &#8220;<strong>Italian Connection<\/strong>&#8221; went all the way back to the tumultuous times of the &#8220;Sun King&#8221;&#8216;s grandmother, the famous lady\u00a0<strong>Marie de M\u00e9dicis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>In many ways, cardinal Mazarin, literally godfather of the young <em>Louis XIV<\/em>, and even sometimes rumored to be his biological father, can be seen as the undisputed &#8220;<\/strong><em><strong>parrain<\/strong><\/em><strong>&#8220;(French f<\/strong><strong>or\u00a0&#8220;Godfather&#8221;) of the &#8220;Italian Connection.&#8221; This Italian network was comparable to a &#8220;<em>mafia<\/em>&#8221; in the modern sense, and for a while dominated <em>Louis XIV<\/em>&#8216;s <\/strong><strong><em>entourage<\/em>.<\/strong><strong> At another level, the cardinal paved the way for the Italian-born Jean-Baptiste Lully to become the most dreaded composer of Louis XIV&#8217;s royal court<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>\u00c0 Suivre <\/em>(To be Continued)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<img width=\"295\" height=\"350\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2011\/02\/130043-295x350.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image tmp-hide-img\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2011\/02\/130043-295x350.jpg 295w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2011\/02\/130043.jpg 357w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 295px) 100vw, 295px\" \/><p>It seems that whenever people around the world think of the term opera, it is l&#8217;op\u00e9ra italien that comes up first in their minds.
