It\u2019s almost time for another Christmas Eve R\u00e9veillon<\/a>. While le repas de No\u00ebl<\/strong>1<\/a><\/sup>the Christmas meal<\/em><\/span> can often be fancy and festive, sometimes you\u2019re just in the mood for something simple and convivial. If you\u2019re looking for something different, perhaps you\u2019d consider a R\u00e9veillon Raclette.<\/p>\n

La Raclette<\/h3>\n

This delicious French\/Swiss meal that Josh first described for us back in October of 2017<\/a> is having a bit of a moment.<\/p>\n

A group of students in the Lorraine region of France<\/a> recently mounted a campaign to demand that the school\u00a0cantine<\/strong>2<\/a><\/sup>cafeteria<\/em><\/span> serve\u00a0de la raclette au moins une fois pas an<\/strong>3<\/a><\/sup>raclette at least once per year<\/em><\/span>. To make their case, the students hung\u00a0des affiches<\/strong>4<\/a><\/sup>posters<\/em><\/span> in the couloirs de l\u2019\u00e9cole<\/strong>5<\/a><\/sup>school\u2019s hallways<\/em><\/span>\u00a0and even came up with a song:
\nEn chaussettes ou en claquettes<\/strong>\/In socks or in tap shoes<\/em>
\nJ’aime la raclette<\/strong>\/I love raclette<\/em>
\nAvec elle c’est la f\u00eate<\/strong>\/With it\/her it is a party<\/em>

Despite the challenge of preparing\u00a0une raclette pour plus de 400 \u00e9l\u00e8ves<\/strong>6<\/a><\/sup>a raclette for more than 400 students<\/em><\/span> (equipment, cost, etc.) the \u201cprotest\u201d – which started as a simple joke to\u00a0faire rire les amis<\/strong>7<\/a><\/sup>to make their friends laugh<\/em><\/span> – was successful.<\/p>\n

Le lundi 13 d\u00e9cembre<\/strong>8<\/a><\/sup>Monday December 13<\/em><\/span> (which turns out to be the journ\u00e9e internationale de la raclette<\/a>!<\/strong>)9<\/a><\/sup>International day of the Raclette<\/em><\/span>, the school cantine<\/strong> served up patates, charcuterie, et fromage<\/strong>10<\/a><\/sup>potatoes, deli meats, and cheese<\/em><\/span>\u00a0to the happy kids<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The last week saw a number of winners<\/em> across French news.<\/p>\n

The reigning Miss \u00cele-de-France,\u00a0Diane Leyre<\/a>, was selected as the new Miss France for 2022. The 24-year-old Parisian agent immobilier<\/strong>14<\/a><\/sup>real estate agent<\/em><\/span> believes that \u201con peut \u00eatre Miss France, f\u00e9ministe, et fi\u00e8re<\/strong><\/a>\u201d15<\/a><\/sup>one can be Miss France, feminist, and proud<\/span>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

And the young Enzo, who I first mentioned back in early November<\/a>, sadly didn\u2019t win the latest edition of Eurovision Jr. – which was held in France this year – but he did represent, coming in third<\/a>! France, with 187 points, lost to second-place Pologne<\/strong>16<\/a><\/sup>Poland<\/em><\/span> (218 points) and the first-place\u00a0Arm\u00e9nie<\/strong>17<\/a><\/sup>Armenia<\/em><\/span> (224 points).<\/p>\n

Vocabulary of the week<\/h3>\n

I learned a new term this week from this article<\/a> about the current poor state of les rues de Paris<\/strong><\/a>. Potholes<\/em> are a real problem for riders and drivers of all kinds in cities around the world and in Paris these\u00a0nids-de-poule<\/strong>18<\/a><\/sup>lit. chicken\u2019s nests<\/em><\/span> have lately been an increasing source of frustration.<\/p>\n

According to the article, the problem has gotten so bad, riding around Paris is now like participating in the Paris-Roubaix<\/a>, a one-day cycling race from Paris to Roubaix (on the border with Belgium). The race, one of cycling\u2019s oldest, is famous for its rough terrain and cobblestones<\/a>.<\/p>\n
