Mardi Gras<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s traditional to feast on this last day before Lent, and for many the day\u2019s eating isn\u2019t complete without a local fried dough. Around France, each region even seems to have its own special treat for the day. \u201cEn effet, les mets de pr\u00e9dilection de cette journ\u00e9e sont les beignets, les cr\u00eapes ou les gaufres<\/strong>\u201d2<\/a><\/sup>Effectively, the food of choice on this day is often beignets, crepes, or waffles<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n

\u00c7a (ne) saute (pas) aux yeux!<\/strong>3<\/a><\/sup>It\u2019s (not) so obvious<\/i> [lit. It (doesn\u2019t) jump to your eyes<\/em>]!<\/span> Sometimes the most obvious things elude us. In getting ready to write this week\u2019s post and looking back to last year, I oh-so-briefly had the thought \u201cOh look, Mardi Gras was on a Tuesday last year too. What a coincidence!\u201d Of course, just like les vendredi 13 always fall on Friday, Mardi Gras always falls on a Tuesday!<\/div>\n

Les C\u00e9sars<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s award season (or so they say) and a good entertainment awards show is a celebration of its own. Le 25 f\u00e9vrier<\/strong>4<\/a><\/sup>February 25<\/em><\/span> France celebrated the 47e<\/sup> Cesars<\/a> to honor the best in French film.<\/p>\n

One of this year\u2019s top films was the rock opera Annette (staring Marion Cotillard and Adam Driver, available on Amazon). \u00a0The film, r\u00e9alis\u00e9 par le cin\u00e9aste franco-am\u00e9ricain<\/strong>5<\/a><\/sup>directed by the Franco-American<\/em><\/span> Leos Carax who won the prize for meilleur r\u00e9alisateur<\/strong>6<\/a><\/sup>best\u00a0director<\/em><\/span>, was also recognized for\u00a0effets visuels, meilleur montage, meilleur son, meilleure musique originale<\/strong>7<\/a><\/sup>visual effects, best editing, best sound, and best original music<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n

In related news, the French actrice Val\u00e9rie Lemercier won the Cesar for meilleure actrice<\/strong>8<\/a><\/sup>best actress<\/em><\/span> for her work as \u201cAline\u201d in the film of the same name \u2026 a sort of \u201cvrai faux biopic de C\u00e9line Dion qu’elle a \u00e9crit et r\u00e9alis\u00e9<\/strong>\u201d9<\/a><\/sup>pseudo\u00a0<\/em>(lit. true false<\/em>) biopic about C\u00e9line Dion that she wrote and directed<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Disneyland Paris at 30<\/h3>\n

In 1992 The Walt Disney Companies opened their latest global theme park in the middle of a former farming community to the east of Paris.\u00a0When I was living in France after college, I had the chance to visit the recently opened park with some of my family. It was a rainy, gray 11 novembre<\/strong>10<\/a><\/sup>11th of November<\/em><\/span>, but we still managed to have a great time.<\/p>\n

Originally known as EuroDisney, the park – now known as Disneyland Paris and about to celebrate it\u2019s 30th anniversary – wasn\u2019t very popular when it first opened and there weren\u2019t a lot of people. We had the run of the park almost to ourselves. In the intervening years, much like their changing opinions about le McDo<\/strong><\/a>, the French have come to embrace the park and it is now a popular destination.<\/p>\n
