{"id":34618,"date":"2022-03-11T19:21:40","date_gmt":"2022-03-11T18:21:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/?p=34618"},"modified":"2022-03-11T19:21:40","modified_gmt":"2022-03-11T18:21:40","slug":"le-subjonctif","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/le-subjonctif\/","title":{"rendered":"Le subjonctif"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Coucou tout le monde!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I thought it was time for a grammar lesson, so today let&#8217;s look at the subjunctive.<\/p>\n<p>The subjunctive mood (not a tense!) expresses anything that is <em>not\u00a0<\/em>an assertion (the indicative mood) but, rather, a doubt, wish, possibility, or judgment. It does exist in English as well, albeit less common, for example: \u201cI suggest that you <strong>be<\/strong>\u00a0careful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here are some more rules for the use of the French subjunctive:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The sentence must contain\u00a0a main clause and a subordinate clause in order to use the subjunctive<\/li>\n<li>There must be two different subjects in a sentence that uses the subjunctive.<\/li>\n<li>The clauses must be joined by\u00a0<em>que\u00a0<\/em>or, in very special circumstances,\u00a0<em>qui.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>The sentence must communicate a <strong>want, wish, need, desire, doubt, emotion, possibility, or denial.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In order to form the subjunctive from regular verbs, you take the third person plural form and drop the -ent. \u00a0Then you add the following endings:<\/p>\n<table class=\" aligncenter\" style=\"height: 246px\" width=\"290\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"89\"><strong>Pronoun<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"89\"><strong>Ending<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"89\"><strong>Verb<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"89\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"89\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"89\"><em>dormir<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"89\"><em>je<\/em><\/td>\n<td width=\"89\"><em>-e<\/em><\/td>\n<td width=\"89\"><em>dorme<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"89\"><em>tu<\/em><\/td>\n<td width=\"89\"><em>-es<\/em><\/td>\n<td width=\"89\"><em>dormes<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"89\"><em>il\/elle\/on<\/em><\/td>\n<td width=\"89\"><em>-e<\/em><\/td>\n<td width=\"89\"><em>dorme<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"89\"><em>nous<\/em><\/td>\n<td width=\"89\"><em>-ions<\/em><\/td>\n<td width=\"89\"><em>dormions<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"89\"><em>vous<\/em><\/td>\n<td width=\"89\"><em>-iez<\/em><\/td>\n<td width=\"89\"><em>dormiez<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"89\"><em>ils\/elles<\/em><\/td>\n<td width=\"89\"><em>-ent<\/em><\/td>\n<td width=\"89\"><em>dorment<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Here are some starting sentences that will help you understand whether or not you will use the subjunctive or the indicative:<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center\" valign=\"top\" width=\"288\"><strong>Subjunctive<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center\" valign=\"top\" width=\"288\"><strong>Indicative<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center\" valign=\"top\" width=\"288\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Je veux que<\/p>\n<p>Je d\u00e9sire que<\/p>\n<p>Je souhaite que<\/p>\n<p>J&#8217;ai peur que<\/p>\n<p>Je crains que<\/p>\n<p>J&#8217;ai envie<\/p>\n<p>J&#8217;ai besoin<\/p>\n<p>Je refuse<\/p>\n<p>J&#8217;emp\u00eache que<\/p>\n<p>Je regrette que<\/p>\n<p>Je doute que<\/p>\n<p>Je ne pense pas que<\/p>\n<p>Je ne crois pas que<\/p>\n<p>Je ne suis pas s\u00fbr(e) que<\/p>\n<p>Il est n\u00e9cessaire que<\/p>\n<p>Il faut que<\/p>\n<p>Il est possible que<\/p>\n<p>Il est impossible que<\/p>\n<p>Il est obligatoire que<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"288\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">J&#8217;esp\u00e8re que<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Je confirme que<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Je sais que<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Je constate que<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Je v\u00e9rifie que<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Je remarque que<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">J&#8217;observe que<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Je vois que<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Je dis que<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">J&#8217;affirme que<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Je suis convaincu<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Je pense que<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Je crois que<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Je suis s\u00fbr(e) que<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Il est certain<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Il est s\u00fbr<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Il est \u00e9vident<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Il est vrai<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Il est clair<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<p><em>Je veux que <strong>tu sois<\/strong> \u00e0 l&#8217;heure<\/em> &#8211; I want you to be on time (I want that you are on time) <strong>(Subjonctif)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Il est \u00e9vident qu&#8217;elles sont contentes<\/em> &#8211; It is obvious that they are happy <strong>(Indicatif)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>________________________________<\/p>\n<p>In the example above we see the irregular verb <strong>\u00eatre<\/strong> conjugated in the subjonctif:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>\u00eatre<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>que je sois<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>que tu sois<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>qu\u2019il\/elle\/on soit<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>que nous soyons<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>que vous soyez<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>qu\u2019ils\/elles soient<\/em><\/p>\n<p>and here is <strong>avoir<\/strong> in the subjonctif:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>avoir<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>que j\u2019aie<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>que tu aies<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>qu\u2019il\/elle\/on ait<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>que nous ayons<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>que vous ayez<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>qu\u2019ils\/elles aient<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Of course there are other irregular verbs as well, such as <strong>faire, venir, aller, pouvoir, etc.. <\/strong>Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawlessfrench.com\/grammar\/subjunctive-irregular-conjugations\/\">this list here<\/a>\u00a0to see some of these irregular verbs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Try some of these sentences below in the comments by filling in either the subjunctive or the indicative:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Il veut que tu _______ <strong>(\u00eatre) <\/strong> pr\u00eat.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Il faut qu&#8217;il ______ <strong>(pouvoir)\u00a0<\/strong>bosser demain.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Je pense que tout ____ <strong>(aller)<\/strong> bien.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>J&#8217;ai envie qu&#8217;ils<\/em> _____ <em><strong>(venir)<\/strong> ce soir.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Je me dis que nous ______ <strong>(avoir)<\/strong> fait une erreur.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Coucou tout le monde!
