In 1869, Gustave Flaubert published his \u00c9ducation sentimentale1<\/a><\/sup>You can find the integral novel here<\/a> on Google Books.<\/span>. This classic example of the Bildungsroman or roman d\u2019apprentissage<\/strong>2<\/a><\/sup>coming-of-age story<\/em>\u00a0<\/span> tells the story of law student Frederic Moreau and his infatuation with the older Mme Arnoux in his hometown in Normandy. This week we\u2019ll have our own \u00e9ducation sentimentale<\/strong>3<\/a><\/sup>emotional lesson<\/em><\/span> as we explore les sentiments en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>4<\/a><\/sup>emotions in French<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Sentiments ou \u00e9motions<\/h3>\n

\u201cOn pense, \u00e0 tort, que les sentiments et les \u00e9motions se r\u00e9f\u00e8rent \u00e0 la m\u00eame chose mais en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 ils s’agit de deux notions diff\u00e9rentes.<\/strong><\/a>\u201d5<\/a><\/sup>People think, mistakenly, that feelings and emotions are the same thing, but in reality they represent two different ideas.<\/em><\/span> But like our sensations<\/a> are tied to our senses<\/a>, les \u00e9motions et les sentiments sont \u00e9troitement li\u00e9s<\/strong>6<\/a><\/sup>emotions and feelings are tightly coupled<\/em><\/span>. And their differences – for our purposes – are less interesting than what they have in common! \u201cLes sentiments font vivre toutes sortes d\u2019\u00e9motions et, \u00e0 l\u2019inverse, les \u00e9motions peuvent g\u00e9n\u00e9rer des sentiments.<\/b><\/a>\u201d7<\/a><\/sup>Feelings animate our emotions, and in the other direction, emotions can generate feelings.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Whether good or bad, high or low, for me les sentiments et les \u00e9motions pimentent la vie!<\/strong>8<\/a><\/sup>feelings and emotions spice up life<\/em><\/span> Some of the major feelings and emotions in French include:<\/p>\n

La joie<\/strong>\u00a0(joy<\/em>)
\nJe suis heureux\/heureuse<\/strong> – I am happy<\/em> (m.\/f.)
\nLe bonheur<\/strong> – happiness<\/em>
\nLe sourire<\/strong> – the smile
\n<\/em>sourire<\/strong> – to smile<\/em><\/p>\n

La tristesse<\/strong>\u00a0(sadness<\/em>)
\nJe suis triste<\/strong> – I am sad
\n<\/em>pleurer\u00a0<\/b>– to cry
\n<\/em>les larmes<\/strong> – tears<\/em><\/p>\n

L\u2019espoir<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(hope<\/em>, all that remained when Pandora opened her bo\u00eete<\/strong>) – and after all, what do we have if we can\u2019t have hope. Pour \u00eatre heureux dans la vie, il faut avant tout garder l\u2019espoir.<\/strong>10<\/a><\/sup>To be happy in life, above all else, keep hope.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

A first for the Tour.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
