{"id":4522,"date":"2011-03-20T03:14:35","date_gmt":"2011-03-20T03:14:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/?p=4522"},"modified":"2014-06-12T16:56:13","modified_gmt":"2014-06-12T14:56:13","slug":"le-nucleaire-civil-pour-ou-contre-for-or-against","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/le-nucleaire-civil-pour-ou-contre-for-or-against\/","title":{"rendered":"Le nucl\u00e9aire civil: pour ou contre?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the wake of the tragic <strong><em>tremblement de terre <\/em><\/strong>(earthquake) that devastated\u00a0<strong>Japan <\/strong>a few days ago, an overheated debate has re-emerged on the international scene concerning the risks associated with the development of <strong><em>l&#8217;<strong><em><strong>\u00e9<\/strong><\/em><\/strong>nergie <strong>nucl\u00e9aire <\/strong><\/em><\/strong>for civilian purposes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Many opponents of the use of this form of energy are undoubtedly well-intentioned, and are quick\u00a0to point out\u00a0previous nuclear-related accidents, such as the\u00a0<strong>1979 Three <\/strong><strong>Mile Island <\/strong>accident in <strong>Pennsylvania <\/strong>(an accident that, eerily enough, seems to have been announced to\u00a0the <strong><em>&#8220;grand public<\/em><\/strong>&#8221;\u00a012 days\u00a0<em>before <\/em>its occurrence, in the famous American\u00a0thriller &#8220;<strong>The China Syndrome<\/strong>&#8220;, starring Jane Fonda and Jack Lemon), or the <strong>1986 Chernobyl disaster<\/strong>, the only of such accidents to be classified as a <em><strong>niveau sept <\/strong><\/em>(level seven) on the &#8220;<em><strong>\u00c9chelle internationale des \u00e9v\u00e9nements nucl\u00e9aires<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; (&#8220;The International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But, in the same time, and beyond these very legitimate fears over the safety of our planet and its environment, several leaders of emerging countries, such as <strong>China, Brazil, <\/strong><strong>India<\/strong>, and <strong>South Africa<\/strong>, suspect less laudable motivations behind re-launching the &#8220;nuclear debate&#8221;, as was the case with the\u00a0<strong>&#8220;CO<sub>2 <\/sub>cap-and-trade&#8221; <\/strong>issue, whose true designs, in some powerful circles,\u00a0had less to do with <strong><em>l&#8217;environnement <\/em><\/strong>per se\u00a0than with issues of\u00a0<strong><em>domination\u00a0g\u00e9opolitique <\/em><\/strong>and <em><strong>\u00e9conomique<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But before going further into this topic, which can be the subject of a separate post here on the French Blog, you are invited today to watch a very valuable <strong><em>documentaire f<em>ran\u00e7ais<\/em> <\/em><\/strong>called &#8220;<strong><em>les dessous des cartes<\/em><\/strong>&#8221;
