(&#8220;Everyday I wash my brain with advertisings&#8221;)<\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">* * *<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">While it is not as widely renowned as &#8220;<em><strong>Candide<\/strong><\/em>&#8220;, the novel &#8220;<strong><em><strong>Zadig ou la Destin\u00e9e<\/strong><\/em><\/strong>&#8221; (&#8220;Zadig, or The Book of Fate&#8221;) stands today as one of the major works of <strong>Voltaire,<\/strong> although, we are told, the French philosopher may have opportunistically discarded its value and significance\u00a0<strong><em>vers la fin de sa vie<\/em><\/strong> (towards the end of his life)&#8212;&#8220;Age of the Enligntenment&#8221;\u00a0<em><strong>oblige<\/strong><\/em><strong>!<\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">* * *<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">The namesake of the novel, &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>Zadig<\/strong><\/em><\/span>&#8220;<strong>, <\/strong>presented as Babylonian by the author who otherwise makes no pretense to historical insight, means in Arabic &#8220;<em><strong>v<strong><em><strong>\u00e9<\/strong><\/em><\/strong>ridique&#8221; <\/strong><\/em>(&#8220;truthful&#8221;), as in the name of the faithful companion in Islam,\u00a0<strong>Abu Bakr &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Es-Siddiq<\/em><\/span><\/strong>&#8220;, and, quite similarly, means &#8220;<em><strong>le juste&#8221; <\/strong><\/em>(the just) in Hebrew, as in &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>Tsadik<\/strong><\/em><\/span>&#8220;, the religious title related to the Hassidic tradtion.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">In fact, and it is a rather curious fact that <a href=\"http:\/\/ressources-cla.univ-fcomte.fr\/gerflint\/Mondearabe6\/larcher.pdf\/\">only a few <strong><em>&#8220;critiques <em>litt\u00e9raires<\/em><\/em>&#8221; <\/strong>seem to have noticed that before<\/a>, the tale of Voltaire&#8217;s hero makes several thinly-veiled allusions to the well-known story of <strong>Mo\u00efse (<\/strong><strong>Moses)<\/strong> and <strong>El-Khidr<\/strong>, mentioned in <strong><em>le Coran<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0the Holy Book of Islam.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p>True to his name, Zadig is truthful, brave, compassionate, and stands for justice whatever <strong><em>contr\u00e9es lointaines <\/em><\/strong>(far-off lands)\u00a0his <strong><em>destin <\/em><\/strong>(destiny, or fate) leads him to&#8212;In short, a diametric opposite of a &#8220;<strong><em>Zadig-stic<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; (read &#8220;sadistic&#8221;) behavior, you may say.But, if that is the case, what justifies <em><strong>le<\/strong><\/em> <strong><em>jeu de mot<\/em><\/strong> (the pun) in the title of today&#8217;s post<strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong> * * * <\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">A simple look around the world we live in today, ceaselessly &#8220;bombarded&#8221; by <strong><em>des pubs<\/em><\/strong> (ads) that &#8220;urge&#8221; our brave citizenry to buy such and such glorified\u00a0<strong><em>produit <\/em><\/strong>(product), could serve to remind us of what the authoritative\u00a0<strong>Edward Bernays<\/strong> -considered the &#8220;forefather&#8221; of the field of <strong><em>les relations publiques<\/em><\/strong><em>, <\/em><strong>(PR)<\/strong><em>,<\/em>and accessorily <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-maximum-vocab-la-famille\/\">neveu<\/a> <\/em><\/strong>(nephew) of <strong>Dr. Sigmund Freud<\/strong>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0wrote in his &#8220;seminal work&#8221;, &#8220;<strong>Propaganda<\/strong>&#8220;, several years before the emergence of <em><strong>la t<em><strong><strong><em><strong>\u00e9<\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/strong><\/em>l<em><strong><strong><em><strong>\u00e9<\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/strong><\/em>vision<\/strong><\/em> and\u00a0<em><strong>l&#8217;Internet<\/strong><\/em>:<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<pre style=\"text-align: left;\">\"[<strong>Our] minds are molded, our tastes formed,<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>our ideas suggested,\u00a0largely by men we have never heard of.\u00a0<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic\u00a0<\/strong><\/pre>\n<pre style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>society is organized.\" \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/pre>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">In these conditions, there is little wonder that some of us, more &#8220;<strong><em>sensible&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> (&#8220;sensitive&#8221;), and perhaps more &#8220;obedient&#8221; by nature, to this type of psychological treatment or &#8220;conditioning&#8221; of the masses, would tend to confuse, say, <em><strong>faire du shopping <\/strong><\/em>(doing shopping) with&#8230; <strong><em>la philosophie <\/em><\/strong>(philosophy)<strong>!<\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">* * *<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Quand Lefebvre confond &quot;Zadig&quot; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">Take the fine, nearly Pavlovian, example offered to us by\u00a0<strong>Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric\u00a0Lefebvre<\/strong>, a French politician associated with the ruling party,\u00a0<em><strong>l&#8217;UMP<\/strong>.<\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><br \/>\n<\/em>Asked a few days ago about the book which had left the most powerful impact upon him, Monsieur Lefebvre, who, understandably, was then busy promoting his own new book, answered: &#8220;<strong><em>Sans doute, &#8220;Zadig et Voltaire&#8221;<\/em>&#8221; <\/strong>(&#8220;Undoubtedly, &#8216;Zadig and Voltaire'&#8221;),and even <strong><em>enfonce le clou <\/em><\/strong>(drives the point home) by saying: &#8220;<strong><em>Je m&#8217;y replonge d&#8217;ailleurs assez souvent<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;, meaning that he goes back to reading it quite often&#8230;<br \/>\n<em><br \/>\n<\/em>The only trouble is, while Voltaire has indeed written a novel called &#8220;<strong><em><strong>Zadig ou la Destin\u00e9e<\/strong><\/em><\/strong>&#8221; (&#8220;Zadig, or The Book of Fate&#8221;), as we have seen above&#8212;&#8220;<em><strong>Zadig et Voltaire<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; happens to be the name of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zadig-et-voltaire.com\/\">French\u00a0<em><strong>pr\u00eat-\u00e0-porter <\/strong><\/em>(ready-to-wear) manufacturer<\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn2.greatsong.net\/album\/extra\/various-this-is-our-music-zadig-voltaire-music-109643175.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>A &#8220;Zadig &amp; Voltaire&#8221; commercial: After the clothes, enters the &#8220;Zadig &amp; Voltaire Music&#8221;&#8212;Talk about a spin!<\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">* * *<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">In a sudden fit of what ought to be described as frantic &#8220;<strong>cyber sadism<\/strong>&#8220;, &#8220;<strong>E-sadism<\/strong>&#8221; (or plain &#8220;<strong>Zadig-stic<\/strong>&#8221; behavior, in this specific case), French and Francophone\u00a0<em><strong>Internautes<\/strong><\/em> (Internet surfers) at large\u00a0have since then seized on the unfortunate <strong><em>lapsus freudien <\/em><\/strong>(&#8220;Freudian slip&#8221;) of Monsieur Lefebvre to build (<strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/conjugaison-le-verbe-construire-to-build\/\">construire<\/a><\/em><\/strong>) an entire &#8220;<strong><em>biblioth\u00e8que Lefebvre<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;, composed\u00a0of books of the same &#8220;<strong>shopping-meets-literature-and-philosophy<\/strong>&#8221;
