In Paris, my host sister introduced me to the local <em>piscine municipale <\/em>(city pool), which was conveniently on the way to the world\u2019s finest <em>boutique des macarons (bonjour, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pierreherme.com\/index.cgi?&amp;cwsid=1785phAC194316ph7071038\">Pierre Herm\u00e9<\/a>).<\/em> Since it was so near the cookie shop, <em>je me suis abonn\u00e9e \u00e0 la piscine<\/em>. <em>Mon<\/em> <em>abonnement <\/em>(my subscription) was the source of enough humor to make fun of the French for a year, but maybe that can be next week\u2019s post.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond <em>la piscine<\/em>, my host sister had <em>un coach<\/em> with whom she did <em>des entra\u00eenements au gym <\/em>every week. \u00a0(Just as English speakers use a lot of French words to talk about cooking, <em>j\u2019ai l\u2019impression<\/em> that French people\u2019s discussions of exercise are dominated by English words. Apparently we\u2019re obese exercise maniacs.)<\/p>\n<p><em>Un coach<\/em>, or personal trainer, is <em>probablement pas<\/em> what you will be looking for when you\u2019re trying to burn off some <em>croissants<\/em>. Let\u2019s learn some <em>vocabulaire de l\u2019exercice!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>On peut jouer au sport<\/em>:<\/strong> one can play sports.<\/p>\n<p><em>Le baseball<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Le basketball<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Le football (le foot)<\/em>: soccer<\/p>\n<p><em>La natation<\/em>: swimming<\/p>\n<p><em>L\u2019aviron:<\/em> rowing (crew)<\/p>\n<p><em>La p\u00e9tanque:<\/em> lawn bowling (this doesn\u2019t count as exercise but it is awesome)<\/p>\n<p><em>Le hockey<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>L\u2019escrime:<\/em> fencing<\/p>\n<p><em>Le golf<\/em> (also not exercise; sorry, <em>golfeurs<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><em>Le rugby<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Le tennis<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>L&#8217;aquagym: <\/em>water aerobics <em>(mon sport pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Et plein d\u2019autres<\/em> (and lots of others).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>On peut s\u2019entra\u00eener tout seule<\/em>:<\/strong> one can train alone (independently).<\/p>\n<p><em>La varappe<\/em>: rock-climbing<\/p>\n<p><em>Courir:<\/em> to run (<em>le cross:<\/em> cross-country running)<\/p>\n<p><em>Le cyclisme: <\/em>cycling<\/p>\n<p><em>La randonn\u00e9e: <\/em>hiking<\/p>\n<p><em>Les arts martiaux: <\/em>martial arts<\/p>\n<p><em>Le patinage sur glace: <\/em>ice skating<\/p>\n<p><em>La halt\u00e9rophilie: <\/em>weightlifting (<em>la musculation<\/em>: bodybuilding.
