{"id":6004,"date":"2011-05-05T10:44:52","date_gmt":"2011-05-05T14:44:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/?p=6004"},"modified":"2017-10-19T14:13:25","modified_gmt":"2017-10-19T12:13:25","slug":"surrealisme-of-andre-breton-la-chute-libre-dans-le-subconscient-the-free-fall-into-the-subconscious","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/surrealisme-of-andre-breton-la-chute-libre-dans-le-subconscient-the-free-fall-into-the-subconscious\/","title":{"rendered":"Surr\u00e9alisme of Andr\u00e9 Breton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Imagine if you were to completely open your mind, without the slightest form of compulsion or restraint, set it into the most &#8220;<strong>passive mode<\/strong>&#8220;, and start writing, just writing, not caring about any <strong><em><em>consid\u00e9ration logique ou esth\u00e9tique<\/em><\/em><\/strong> (logical or esthetical consideration)&#8230; Give free reign to your subconscious to express itself in plain words.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you were able to achieve this sensational experience, then that&#8217;s how close you could get to the essence of &#8220;<strong><em>surr<em><em>\u00e9<\/em><\/em>alisme<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;, as it was defined by its main <strong><em>fondateur<\/em><\/strong> (founder), the French <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/les-tournesols\/\">Andr<strong>\u00e9<\/strong> Breton<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In doing so, <strong>Andr\u00e9\u00a0Breton<\/strong> appears as <strong><em>le produit intellectuel pur <\/em><\/strong>(the pure intellectual product)\u00a0of exactly two major figures that preceded him:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; First, <strong><em>le Docteur<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/leche-vitrine-window-shopping-with-voltaire-a-dangerously-zadig-stic-addiction\/\">Sigmund Freud<\/a><\/strong>, who identified the concept of &#8220;<em><strong>le subconscient<\/strong><\/em>&#8220;, or\u00a0&#8220;<strong>the subconscious<\/strong>&#8220;, in modern psychoanalysis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Second, <strong>Karl Marx<\/strong>, whose Communist &#8220;<strong>manifesto<\/strong>&#8221; promised to set\u00a0<strong><em>la classe du\u00a0prol\u00e9tariat <\/em><\/strong>(the hard working class) free from the yoke of the capitalist class.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* * *<\/p>\n<p>The deep double influence of <strong><em>le p<em>\u00e8<\/em>re de la psychanalyse <\/em><\/strong>(the father of psychoanalysis) and <strong><em>le p<em>\u00e8<\/em>re du communisme <\/em><\/strong>(the father of communism)\u00a0is indeed <strong><em>claire comme de l&#8217;eau de roche <\/em><\/strong>(crystal clear) in Breton&#8217;s own manifesto. A manifesto to which, surprisingly enough for a big fan of &#8220;unrestrained imagination&#8221;, Breton gave the rather unimaginative title of &#8220;<strong><em>Manifeste du <em>Surr\u00e9alisme<\/em><\/em><\/strong>&#8221; (&#8220;Surrealist Manifesto.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>This document, the &#8220;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcf.ua.edu\/Classes\/Jbutler\/T340\/SurManifesto\/ManifestoOfSurrealism.htm\/\">Surrealist Manifesto<\/a><\/strong>&#8220;,\u00a0was\u00a0published in two versions, and was to leave a deep impact in <strong>literature<\/strong>, <strong>music<\/strong>,\u00a0as well as <strong><em>les arts visuels <\/em><\/strong>(visual arts), with\u00a0<strong>Salvador Dali<\/strong> being a case in point in that respect (in <strong>painting <\/strong>as well as in <strong>film.<\/strong>)\u00a0The initial version of the Manifesto was personally <em><strong>r\u00e9dig\u00e9e<\/strong><\/em> (drafted) by Breton in <strong>1924<\/strong>, while the second followed five years later, but this time written only under his supervision.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>With Andr\u00e9 Breton&#8217;s &#8220;<em>Surr\u00e9alisme<\/em>&#8220;, Sigmund Freud&#8217;s\u00a0&#8220;<em>subconscient<\/em>&#8221; (&#8220;subconscious&#8221;)\u00a0joins the rank and file of Karl Marx&#8217;s &#8220;<em>r\u00e9volution permanente&#8221; <\/em>(&#8220;permanent revolution&#8221;)!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* * *<\/p>\n<p>Instead of advocating the freedom of workers, as Marx did in his manifesto, Breton&#8217;s manifesto proposed to free <strong><em>le subconscient <\/em><\/strong>from what his movement regarded as the oppressive chains of <strong>logic<\/strong>, <strong>traditions<\/strong>, <strong>self-censorship<\/strong>, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* * *<\/p>\n<p>With that being said, however, no matter how well-intentioned the &#8220;surrealistic&#8221; and openly &#8220;<strong><em>subversif <\/em><\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0(&#8220;subversive&#8221;) content of Breton&#8217;s call was at the time it was issued,\u00a0<strong><em>une lecture critique <\/em><\/strong>(a critical reading) of his work would certainly question the &#8220;wisdom&#8221; behind it.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Comment cela<\/strong>? <\/em>(How so?)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If we were to see <em><strong>le\u00a0surr\u00e9alisme<\/strong><\/em> for what it is, a simple and spontaneous call to plunge deep into the dark pools of our subconscious, meaning into what is precisely *<strong>below<\/strong>* our consciousness (the prefix &#8220;<strong>sub-<\/strong>&#8221; in the word &#8220;<strong>sub<\/strong>conscious&#8221; means &#8220;below&#8221;), and not <strong>*above*<\/strong> our consciousness, then by establishing a simple symbolic analogy with other works of <strong>Platonic<\/strong> inspiration, such as <strong>Dante Alighieri<\/strong>&#8216;s &#8220;<strong><em>Divine\u00a0Com\u00e9die<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; (&#8220;Divine Comedy&#8221;), one can then easily see what <strong><em>le\u00a0surr\u00e9alisme <\/em><\/strong>would effectively\u00a0correspond to.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* * *<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Where would the path of\u00a0<em>le royaume du subconscient <\/em>(the realm of the subconscious), warmly recommended by the surrealists, would ultimately lead to, according to the Platonic perspective of Dante&#8217;s magnum opus, &#8220;<em>La\u00a0Divine\u00a0Com\u00e9die<\/em>&#8221; (&#8220;The Divine Comedy&#8221;)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* * *<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, seen within this <strong><em>perspective platonique <\/em><\/strong>(Platonic perspective), Surrealism would then appear as the equivalent of an open invitation kindly addressed to humanity, urging it to take a sort of &#8220;<em><strong>aller simple<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; (&#8220;one-way ticket&#8221;) for a &#8220;<strong><em>chute libre collective<\/em><\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0(&#8220;collective free fall.&#8221;) Instead \u00a0of leading &#8220;upwards&#8221;, in an ascending journey towards higher levels of consciousness, to Dante&#8217;s &#8220;<strong><em>Paradisio<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; in this case, it would on the contrary lead &#8220;downwards&#8221;, below consciousness level, straight into the abyss of &#8220;<em><strong>Inferno<\/strong><\/em>&#8220;, Dante&#8217;s hell.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* * *<\/p>\n<p>Once again, the aim of this <strong><em>critique\u00a0d&#8217;inspiration platonique <\/em><\/strong>(critique of Platonic inspiration)\u00a0is not to question the motivation or<strong><em> la bonne intention <\/em><\/strong>(the good intention) of Breton and his followers. In fact, most of them seem to have held the best intentions in advocating the emergence of this kind of &#8220;<em><strong>r\u00e9volution<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; in <strong><em>l&#8217;esprit humain <\/em><\/strong>(the human mind.)
