that thrashed <strong>France <\/strong>from\u00a0<strong><em>le nord<\/em><\/strong> (the North), especially by way of\u00a0<strong><em>la Manche <\/em><\/strong>(the English Channel),\u00a0from the London-inspired &#8220;<strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foliesbergere.com\/\">Folies <em>Berg\u00e8re<\/em><\/a><\/em>&#8221; <\/strong>to the outbreak of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inra.fr\/internet\/Produits\/dpenv\/vfol___2.htm\/\"><em><strong>la vache folle <\/strong><\/em>(mad cow) disease<\/a> (a British bovine concoction of highly &#8220;symptomatic&#8221; character), consider, for a refreshing change, this passionate form of pure\u00a0<strong><em>esprit musical<\/em><\/strong> (musical spirit), which found its way to France through <strong><em>le sud <\/em><\/strong>(the South), about six centuries ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It is the time when France was &#8220;diagnosed&#8221;, so to speak, with what was known back then as &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><em>les folies d&#8217;Espagne<\/em><\/strong><\/span>&#8220;, or &#8220;<strong>the Spanish folia<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">* * *<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Marin Marais : Folies d&#039;Espagne (film)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PZV4mxJuRhM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; (&#8220;All the World&#8217;s Mornings&#8221;), featuring Gerard Depardieu&#8217;s late son, Guillaume, who played the role of a young <a href=\"http:\/\/icking-music-archive.org\/ByComposer\/Marais.php\/\">Marin Marais<\/a>, performing a Spanish\u00a0<em>folia <\/em>(or &#8220;follia&#8221;, as it is spelled by <em>les italiens<\/em>).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">* * *<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>Mais que sont donc, au juste, ces &#8220;folies d&#8217;Espagne&#8221;? <\/em><\/strong>(But what is, precisely, this &#8220;Spanish folia&#8221;?)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">An authoritative German<em><strong> ma\u00eetre \u00e0 danser <\/strong><\/em>(dance master) of the 17th century has defined those Spanish <em>folias<\/em> as the most famous of all the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><em>sarabande <\/em><\/strong><\/span>melodies<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>&#8211; <\/em><\/strong>Well, fine,\u00a0but\u00a0now, for those who never heard of it,<strong><em> qu&#8217;est-ce que la sarabande? <\/em><\/strong>(what is the Sarabande?), <em><strong>et quelle est son histoire <\/strong><\/em>(and what is its story)<strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The statue of <em>le glorieux mousquetaire <\/em>(glorious musketeer) Charles de Batz-Castelmore, better known as d\u2019Artagnan, who died in 1673, sieging Maastricht on behalf of the French king, Louis XIV<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In &#8220;<strong><em>Une intrigue de courreur<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;, the eighth chapter of &#8220;<em><strong>Les<\/strong> <strong>Trois Mousquetaires<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; (&#8220;The Three Musketeers&#8221;), <strong>Alexandre Dumas<\/strong> mentions this rather odd dance form that seemed to take the court of France by surprise, during the time of &#8220;<strong>M. le Cardinal<\/strong>&#8220;, meaning the famous <strong>cardinal-duc de Richelieu<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8211; &#8220;<em><strong>Vous savez l\u2019histoire de la sarabande?<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; (&#8220;You know the story of the Saradande&#8221;?), asked a bourgeois whose wife had just been kidnapped, and who came to confess a dark secret to <strong>d&#8217;Artagnan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8211;
