French people remember\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois Feldman <\/strong>as a distinguished\u00a0chanteur\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(singer) who left an indelible mark\u00a0on the\u00a0French song scene of the 1980<\/strong>‘s.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in addition to an early successful\u00a0carri\u00e8re <\/strong><\/em>(career), they tend to remember his later “gaffe<\/strong>“, or to use nowadays popular “m\u00e8me internet<\/strong><\/em>“<\/strong><\/strong>(“Internet meme”), his “EPIC FAIL<\/strong>“, so to speak, performed en direct <\/em><\/strong>(live) on French Television, in the presence of that same TV host, Michel Drucker<\/strong>, who a few years before had la folle id\u00e9e <\/strong><\/em><\/em><\/strong>(the insane idea) of introducing\u00a0Whitney Houston <\/strong>to <\/span><\/a>Serge Gainsbourg live on his TV show!<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, during a 1996<\/strong> T\u00e9l\u00e9thon<\/strong><\/em> meant to help people suffering from myopathy<\/span><\/a>, Fran\u00e7ois Feldman shouted to the audience: “tout le monde debout!<\/em><\/strong>” (“everybody stand up!”), before trying to catch up with “…l\u00e0-bas!<\/strong><\/em>” (“over there!”), pointing to the smaller portion of the audience who were not sitting on a\u00a0fauteuil roulant <\/em><\/strong>(wheelchair.)<\/span><\/p>\n

By all means, the comment genuinely seemed unintentional by\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois. But if, for a split of a second, he thought that ce\u00a0jeu de mot <\/em><\/strong>(this wordplay<\/strong>) could somehow make people laugh, then he must have immediately come to his mind, though a bit too late of course, the title of his song… “Joue pas<\/strong><\/em>” (“Don’t play<\/strong>“)!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

At any rate, sheer coincidence or not, soon after this incident, the performance of\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois Feldman<\/strong>‘s songs started to\u00a0nosedive dramatically in the charts, which led some French people, with a little penchant <\/em><\/strong>(inclination) for\u00a0dark sense of humor<\/span><\/a>, to speculate that his “everybody stand up” gaffe may have left “un effet paralysant sur sa carri\u00e8re<\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em>“<\/strong><\/strong>, or “a most crippling effect on his career<\/strong>“…<\/span><\/p>\n
