I promised Rose we would make dinner, but we didn\u2019t have time to <em>faire les courses <\/em>(go shopping). So, what was in <em>le frigo<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p><em>Des \u0153ufs (<\/em>eggs), <em>de la farine <\/em>(flour), <em>du lait <\/em>(milk) <em>et du beurre <\/em>(and butter)\u2014<em>bref, des cr\u00eapes\u00a0! <\/em>I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve ever tried to make them before, but you should. Like right now.\u00a0 Especially if you have <em>une petite fille<\/em> (a little girl- okay, Rose, a medium girl) to <em>fouiller le frigo<\/em> (search the fridge) for tasty things to <em>mettre dedans <\/em>(put inside).<\/p>\n<p>We used <em>un fouet <\/em>(a whisk) to mix a cup of flour with two eggs, then slowly added <em>du lait <\/em>and <em>de l\u2019eau<\/em>. <em>Il faut ajouter pas mal de liquide<\/em>\u2014you need to add a good bit of liquid, or else you\u2019ll just make pancakes. \u00a0<em>Une pinc\u00e9e de sel<\/em> (a pinch of salt) is a good idea too. Heat <em>une po\u00eale plate<\/em> (a flat skillet), <em>ajoutez du beurre<\/em> (add some butter), <em>et versez un peu de p\u00e2te<\/em> (and pour some batter)\u00a0! A minute on one side, <em>puis faites-le sauter<\/em> (then flip it, or literally, \u00ab\u00a0make it jump\u00a0\u00bb). Once it jumps, you can add your fillings, or wait and <em>remplir les cr\u00eapes <\/em>(fill the crepes) all at once.<\/p>\n<p>Rose wanted dessert first, so we made our crepes in this order:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Citron sucre (mon pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9!)<\/em>: Lemon juice and sugar<\/li>\n<li><em>P\u00e9pites de chocolat avec du citron <\/em>: Chocolate chips with lemon<\/li>\n<li><em>P\u00e9pites de chocolat et banane<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Confiture, fait maison <\/em>: Home-made jam\u00a0!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Then my sense of responsibility kicked in, and we started to <em>faire des exp\u00e9riences <\/em>(experiment) with dinner crepes. This is when <em>la fouille <\/em>(the excavation) came in:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Fromage<\/em>: cheese<\/li>\n<li><em>Fromage et tomates cerises<\/em>: cheese and cherry tomatoes<\/li>\n<li><em>La sp\u00e9ciale Rose<\/em>: the Rose special, <em>fromage, tomates cerises et persil frais <\/em>(cheese, cherry tomatoes and fresh parsley)<\/li>\n<li><em>Riz et c\u00f4te de porc <\/em>: Rice and pork chop<\/li>\n<li><em>Fromage et \u0153uf <\/em>: Cheese and egg. Super-classic, you pour the batter for the crepe, let it cook on that side for a minute, flip it, sprinkle cheese, and crack an egg onto it. The egg cooks through the crepe and <em>c\u2019est d\u00e9licieux!<\/em> <em>La sauce piquante <\/em>(hot sauce) adds a lot to this one, although you will make purists cry.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Crepes are the rare food that is both <em>\u00e9l\u00e9gant<\/em> enough for your parents and <em>d\u00e9licieux<\/em> enough for your late-night cravings. I once made croissant grilled cheese sandwiches at 4 in the morning, after a night of karaoke and hailstorms in the Southwest. But from now on, <em>que des cr\u00eapes <\/em>(nothing but crepes). If you try it, tell me what you <em>mettre dedans!
