Voil\u00e0<\/em>\u00a0is one of my favorite expressions in French. \u00a0It just seems so French and much more appealing than its English equivalents: ‘there is’ and ‘there are’. \u00a0However, you must be careful because\u00a0Il y a<\/em>\u00a0has the same English translation so to speak, but the meaning or useage is different. \u00a0Voil\u00e0<\/em>\u00a0is used as if you are pointing to the object(s) you are talking about, whereas\u00a0Il y a<\/em>\u00a0simply states the existence of the object(s) you are talking about. \u00a0One practical example that you can use in an email is:\u00a0Voil\u00e0, ci-joint\u00a0la liste<\/span>. <\/em>(You can replace the underlined part with anything you are attaching). \u00a0Here are some other examples to show the difference between the two expressions.<\/p>\n

Il y a <\/em><\/strong>beaucoup de couples ici. <\/em>(There are a lot of couples here.)
\n<\/em>Regardez, voil\u00e0<\/strong>, Madame et Monsieur Dupont.\u00a0 <\/em>(Look, there’s Mrs. and Mr. Dupont.)<\/p>\n

Il y a <\/em><\/strong>un magasin de chaussures par ici.\u00a0 <\/em>(There’s a shoe store nearby.)
\n<\/em>Est-ce qu’il y a<\/strong> des grandes chaussures\u00a0? <\/em>\u00a0(Are there large-size shoes?)
\n<\/em>Voil\u00e0<\/em><\/strong>, la pointure que vous cherchez. <\/em>(There’s the size you’re looking for.)<\/p>\n

Il y a <\/em><\/strong>des march\u00e9s en France.\u00a0 <\/em>(There are markets in France.)
