Thus spoke Jennie<\/strong>, exactly a year ago, evoking her own experience of la la F\u00eate de la musique <\/strong><\/em>in the streets of Paris, which you’re invited to discover (or rediscover) today:<\/p>\n

Thirty years ago, <\/em>in 1981<\/em>, “Maurice Fleuret<\/strong>, appointed Director of Music and Dance (Directeur de la Musique et de la Danse<\/em>), had then a dream\u00a0:\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0la musique partout et le concert nulle part<\/em> \u00bb<\/strong> (music everywhere and concerts nowhere). \u00a0Son r\u00eave <\/em><\/strong>(his dream) became a full day of concerts, from professional groups to regular guys in bands, spread across Paris and, eventually, across the world.\u00a0Des F\u00eates de la musique <\/strong><\/em>are held in over 100 cities around the world, on the\u00a0solstice d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9<\/em><\/strong>, the longest day of the year.<\/p>\n

\u00c0 Paris, il est impossible d\u2019assister \u00e0 tous les \u00e9v\u00e8nements culturels<\/em><\/strong> (<\/em>it\u2019s impossible to attend all the cultural events),\u00a0mais il est \u00e9galement impossible de rater la F\u00eate de la musique<\/em><\/strong> (but it is equally impossible to miss the F\u00eate de la musique).\u00a0La musique est <\/em>partout<\/strong> <\/em>! <\/em>Everywhere\u00a0!<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Faites de la musique, F\u00eate de la Musique<\/em> \u00bb<\/strong>is the guiding principle. \u00ab\u00a0Faites de la musique<\/strong> \u00bb <\/em>: make music<\/strong> ! With all these\u00a0musiciens<\/em><\/strong>, Paris (and other participating cities) is flooded with music. If you\u2019re not performing, chances are you\u2019re running around the city (in 2008, over 100,000 people used the city bike system, V\u00e9lib<\/a><\/strong>, during the one-day festival) listening and carousing.<\/p>\n

The schedule is so full of music, it\u2019s divided by\u00a0arrondissement <\/em><\/strong>(quarter, neighborhood) so you can plan your day.\u00a0Pour se d\u00e9placer <\/em><\/strong>(to get around),\u00a0\u00ab les r\u00e9seaux de m\u00e9tro, bus, RER et train fonctionnent toute la nuit <\/strong>\u00bb<\/em> (voir<\/em>Transports en commun<\/a> : the subway, bus, RER <\/strong>(commuter train) and train networks function all night)!<\/p>\n

When I was in Paris for\u00a0la F\u00eate<\/em>, it was during the soccer Euro Cup, in 2008.\u00a0Les Bleus<\/em><\/strong> \u00e9tait nuls <\/em>(Les Bleus were worthless; tiens,\u00a0\u00e7a me rappelle quelque chose<\/strong>…) <\/em>but the matches made the day even more impossibly packed. In the bars, people screamed;\u00a0dehors <\/em><\/strong>(outside), they sang opera, played rock, danced, drank, checked the soccer score, screamed… It was a wild, sunburned, pagan-festival day, befitting\u00a0le solstice d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9<\/em><\/strong>. If you haven\u2019t celebrated\u00a0cette f\u00eate <\/em>pa\u00efenne <\/em><\/strong>yet,\u00a0pensez-y<\/strong>! Bonne f\u00eate et bon d\u00e9but de l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9! <\/strong><\/em>Happy summer!<\/strong>”<\/p>\n
