I was sitting dans un caf\u00e9 <\/em>(in a coffee shop) today, thinking \u201cWhat on earth will le post d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui<\/em> (today\u2019s post) be about?\u201d Je n\u2019avais plus d\u2019id\u00e9es<\/em>\u2014I didn\u2019t have any more ideas. But the hot, en sueur<\/em><\/strong> (sweaty) people walking by gave me my answer.<\/p>\n

Il fait hyper chaud<\/em><\/strong> \u00e0 New York<\/em>. It\u2019s super hot in New York\u2014l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9<\/em><\/strong> a d\u00e9finitivement commenc\u00e9 <\/em>(summer has definitely started). En plus, il fait lourd<\/strong><\/em> (Plus, it\u2019s humid). Pour combattre la chaleur<\/strong><\/em> (to fight the heat), je vous propose <\/em>(I suggest) deux m\u00e9thodes <\/em>:<\/p>\n

Se baigner<\/em><\/strong> and se baigner<\/em><\/strong> !<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Attends,\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> you say. \u201cWait a minute. \u00a0I might not speak perfect French, but that\u2019s the same word!\u201d<\/p>\n

Tout \u00e0 fait<\/em>, mes amis<\/em> (Exactly, my friends). It\u2019s the same word, but se baigner<\/em> has at least two meanings, and they are both essential outils <\/em>(tools) for summer succ\u00e8s<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Se baigner<\/em> means \u201cto bathe oneself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dans un premier temps<\/em> (this is a really great, formal way of saying \u201cOn the one hand\u201d), se baigner <\/em>means to bathe oneself as in to take a bath or shower<\/strong>. Dans un deuxi\u00e8me temps<\/em>, se baigner<\/em> can mean to bathe oneself in the more antique sense, meaning to swim or \u2018take a dip.\u2019 <\/strong>It connotes leisurely swimming.<\/p>\n

Si vous vous baignez \u00e0 la mer<\/em> (if you go swimming at the seashore), you\u2019ll need one thing that you probably don\u2019t have when vous vous baignez<\/em> in the shower: un maillot de bain<\/em><\/strong>. A bathing suit may be the biggest difference between the two \u2018se baigner\u2019 <\/em>definitions. (Unless, of course, you\u2019ve found a private cove on the C\u00f4te d\u2019Azur, in which case, allez-y<\/em>: go ahead!). Otherwise, un maillot de bain<\/em> is probably essentiel<\/em>. You may also want de la cr\u00e8me solaire<\/em><\/strong> (sunscreen), une serviette de plage<\/em><\/strong> (a beach towel), des lunettes de soleil<\/em><\/strong> (sunglasses) and of course, un tuba<\/em><\/strong>, a snorkel, my new favorite French word.<\/p>\n

If you can\u2019t easily se baigner \u00e0 la plage<\/em> (go swimming at the beach), the summer heat may make you very ready to se baigner dans l\u2019autre sens <\/em>(in the other sense).<\/p>\n

Prendre une douche<\/em><\/strong>, to take a shower, or prendre un bain<\/em><\/strong>, to take a bath, are on the front line of defense against la chaleur<\/em>. In this instance, vous pouvez r\u00e9noncer au maillot de bain<\/em>: you can forgo the bathing suit (ooh la la!). Par contre<\/em> (by contrast), you may want du savon <\/em><\/strong>(soap), du shampooing<\/em><\/strong>, de l’apr\u00e8s-shampooing<\/em><\/strong> (conditioner), and une serviette <\/em><\/strong>(a towel).<\/p>\n
