La France <\/em>has managed to make it into Uncle Mandela<\/strong>‘s\u00a0hottest event of the Summer.\u00a0The last time it failed to\u00a0pass the qualifiers was\u00a0back in 1993<\/strong>, when the co-\u00e9quipiers\u00a0<\/em>of Jean-Pierre Papin<\/strong>\u00a0had their American Dream “broken”<\/a><\/strong> by a surprisingly\u00a0persevering\u00a0Bulgarian team, and\u00a0couldn’t subsequently make it into Uncle Sam<\/strong>‘s hottest event of that Summer 1994<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This year, the World Cup qualification was achieved for les bleus<\/em>, but not without a spicy dose of controversy: Thierry\u00a0Henry<\/strong>‘s hand will, malheureusement<\/em>,\u00a0stay forever\u00a0etched in the minds of Irish fans, even though\u00a0“Titi” (that’s his nickname) has\u00a0several times\u00a0announced his support\u00a0for replaying the match entirely.<\/p>\n

That rematch proposal never happened,\u00a0et pour cause !<\/em>\u00a0Many observers see a “FRI\u20ac<\/strong>“- (money) related issue: The FIFA<\/strong> (the F\u00e9d\u00e9ration Internationale de Football Association<\/em>) has indeed\u00a0way more to gain, with its roster of\u00a0giant sponsors,\u00a0to allow\u00a0the qualification of a\u00a0country of 65 million people\u00a0(read “potential consumers”), France<\/strong>,\u00a0rather\u00a0than a mere\u00a06 million of global financial crisis stricken Ireland<\/strong>… But that is another subject, bien entendu.<\/em><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Uruguay match will not necessarily be un petit\u00a0picnic <\/em>for\u00a0les bleus.\u00a0<\/em>The last time the\u00a0two teams played against each other in\u00a0a World Cup was back in 2002<\/strong>. The\u00a0score ended on a goalless\u00a0draw,\u00a00-0<\/strong>, even though\u00a0l’\u00e9quipe de France <\/em>was missing a key player for almost the whole game, after he received\u00a0un carton rouge <\/em>(a red card.)
