It all started as an informal “underground” social meeting, before blossoming over the years into a big rendez-vous<\/em><\/strong> uniting every doigt vert <\/em><\/strong>(green thumb) around the French capital!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The “<\/strong>graines<\/strong><\/em>“<\/strong>(“seeds”) of the event, so to speak, were planted some thirty years ago, in the small town of Thiais<\/strong>, south of Paris<\/strong>, when les amoureux de la nature <\/em><\/strong>(nature lovers) would put their outils de jardinage <\/em><\/strong>(gardening tools)<\/span><\/a> aside, and meet up to show off, for example, their most beautifultomates <\/em><\/strong>orcitrouilles <\/em><\/strong>(pumpkins) – all in a very friendly and festive ambiance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, its avid fans like to describe it as une <\/strong>f\u00ea<\/strong>te populaire <\/strong><\/em>(folk festival) that gathers an impressive amount of people, who all enjoy spending du<\/strong><\/em> bon temps<\/em> <\/strong>(some good time.)<\/span><\/p>\n

But that, in fact, would only be l’arbre qui cache la for\u00eat<\/em><\/strong> (the tree that hides the forest)…<\/span><\/p>\n

The celebration features almost a hundred exposants<\/strong><\/em> (exhibitors): Some artisans <\/em><\/strong>(craftsmen), associations,\u00a0p\u00e9pini\u00e9ristes<\/strong><\/em> (nurserymen), attracting thousands of visitors in the span of only two days!<\/span><\/p>\n

Each year, la F\u00eate du jardinier amateur <\/em><\/strong>(the Celebration of the Amateur Gardener) selects a specific theme: In 2011<\/strong>, the French gardening afecionados invite everyone to explore the world of les plantes tropicales<\/em><\/strong>, featuring lots of exotic spices, as well as des plantes carnivores<\/strong><\/em> (carnivorous plants) that you probably never heard of in your whole life.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

By setting foot into the impressive Palais omnisports <\/em><\/strong>of the town set for the event, some visitors feel like they’ve walked intoune v\u00e9ritable jungle<\/strong><\/em> (a true a jungle)—and others dans un authentique jardin japonais <\/strong><\/em>(in an authentic Japanese garden)!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Should you be puzzled by any plant in particular, several specialists would be more than glad to tell you everything you want to know (and probably some more.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Outside of the Palace, les enfants <\/em><\/strong>(kids) find all sorts of games and workshops, teaching them, for example, how to make animals out of recycled objects, or how to extract pigments out of tree leaves.<\/span><\/p>\n

But, of course, a folk festival like that can’t take place in France without thowing a bit of musique!<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, a big concert gratuit <\/em><\/strong>(free) is held everytime. The special invit\u00e9<\/em><\/strong> of this year is the French slam poet “Grand Corps Malade<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The Palais also boasts des<\/em><\/strong> expositions avicoles <\/strong><\/em>(poultry exhibitions), others about la vanille <\/em><\/strong>(vanilla), les h\u00e9rissons<\/strong><\/em> (hedgehogs), and even la cueillette <\/em><\/strong>(the picking) of honey in countries as far as Yemen!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
