5 Types of Insurance in Germany (Part 2) Posted by on May 29, 2018 in Uncategorized

Welcome to another post! This is a continuation of the different types of Insurance in Germany, you can find the first post here. In the last post I explained the main insurances that you need if you live in Germany. Here are some other useful ones.

Haftpflichtversicherung – Liability Insurance
This insurance covers you incase you break someone elses belongings. For example you ride your bike into someone elses car, the insurance will pay for the person’s car to get repaired. This insurance means you are insured not only in Germany, but worldwide. I recently got given a key from my work and they also said I should check that my Haftpflichtversicherung covers keys as well incase I lose it!

Kfz Haftpflichtversicherung – Car Liability Insurance (Kfz is short for Kraftfahrzeug)
What anybody needs when they drive a car – car insurance. This insurance belongs to Autoversicherung which is of course pflicht (mandatory).

Reisekrankenversicherung – Travel Health Insurance
The name pretty much explains it. Here you are insured incase something happens to you whilst on holiday outside of Germany. This pays for the doctor and the treatment, and can even pay for your journey home if you are heavily injured and need special requirements.

Reiserücktrittversicherung – Travel Cancellation Insurance
This comes in handy if you booked a holiday a few months in advance, but when the time comes you cannot go. This insurance pays all or some of the Stornogebühren (cancellation fees).

Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung – Occupational Disability Insurance
This insurance is incase you become ill and can no longer work. This can be because of your health or for example if you had an accident. A Doctor will of course have to confirm that you are not able to work for at least three years and then the insurance will pay you.

Do you know any other interesting insurances? Let me know in the comments below,

Tschüss,

Larissa

How about homeowners and renters insurance?

On the flip side — where there is potential liability, there is often also a “release” or a “waiver” to be signed. 🙂
