I’ve always found it very interesting that countries have different names in every language! I’ve made a list of translations where some are very similar to how you would say them in English and others more obscure. At the bottom I’ve also written how you would use the countries in a sentence – take a look!

The easy ones:

England                                                                                England

Portugal                                                                               Portugal

Ukraine                                                                                Ukraine

Kanada                                                                                 Canada

China                                                                                    China

Japan                                                                                    Japan

Schweden                                                                           Sweden

Polen                                                                                    Poland

Italien                                                                                   Italy

Australien                                                                           Australia

Indien                                                                                   India

Spanien                                                                               Spain

Island                                                                                    Iceland

Südafrika                                                                           South Africa

Türkei                                                                                   Turkey

Mongolei                                                                            Mongolia

The harder ones:

Frankreich                                                                          France

Deutschland                                                                     Germany

Kroatien                                                                            Croatia

Schweiz                                                                             Switzerland

Griechenland                                                                    Greece

Österreich                                                                        Austria

Belgien                                                                              Belgium

Norwegen                                                                          Norway

Ägypten                                                                             Egypt

Neuseeland                                                                       New Zealand

die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika                    The united states of America

How to say where you come from

Ich komme aus …                                            I come from …

Ich bin in … geboren                                      I was born in …

Ich wohne in …                                                 I live in …

For example:

Ich komme aus Deutschland                       I come from Germany

Ich bin in Spanien geboren                         I was born in Spain

Ich wohne in Ägypten                                   I live in Egypt

ACHTUNG! WARNING!

For the following countries you have to put the article as well:

die Türkei, die Mongolei  (goes for all countries ending in „ei“), die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika, die Schweiz, die Ukraine

For example:     Ich komme aus der Türkei (note that the article changes!)

                            Ich wohne in der Schweiz

Ich bin in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika geboren
