Germany wins Eurovision Song Contest 2010 Posted by on Jun 1, 2010 in Culture, Folklore, Music, People, Traditions

Just some days ago, May 29th, Germany has won the 55th Eurovision Song Contest (formerly known as Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson).

19 year old Lena Meyer-Landrut performed her song “satellite” in Oslo and erreichte (achieved) 246 points which is a fantastic result.

Casted and entdeckt (discovered) by one of the most successful TV entertainers in Germany, Stefan Raab, Lena promoted herself and her Lied (song) in almost every TV show the last weeks and started something like a “Lena-Mania” in Germany. So nearly everybody in Germany knows her. For herself the hype was quite ungewöhnlich (unusual) because she was about to make her final school exams during the casting and the endless Auftritte (performances).

So Samstagnacht (Saturday night) was the big night and Germany turned into a big party as the Eurovision song contest was broadcast. Thousands of people took part in private or public viewings and supported “their” Lena in Oslo/Norwegen (Norway). In some cities it almost felt like the finals of the soccer world championship! People were really glücklich (happy) about this. The Effekt (effect) of the whole event was amazing. When I came to work on Monday morning a lot of my co-workers were singing Lena´s song and were in a really good Stimmung (mood).

It´s the second time that Germany has won the contest…though Germany took part in the Eurovision song contest every Jahr (year) since 1956 (as the only nation by the way). The last time was 28 years before in 1982: Singer Nicole has won with her song “Ein bißchen Friede” (a little bit of peace) which is still very bekannt (famous) in Germany.

The tradition of the contest is, that the winner nation will be the organizer and Gastgeber (host) for the following year. So in 2011 the Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Germany. And it´s already rumored that Lena should sing again to defend the title.  So you can bet that there will be a good party again!

My name is Jan and I live in the south west of Germany. My profession is being a project manager at a company that creates digital media (first of all internet related things). This is my job since over a decade so I´m quite familiar with the web and its tools. Whereat today almost every school kid does. But that´s one of the main reasons why nowadays there are quasi no more limits in the internet and so it can be used for all imaginable types of things. For example learning languages! And that´s where we are at the moment. I first got in touch with Transparent Language when my family and I used to live in France a couple of years ago. I just had a break from work and by coincidence I produced some cultural videos in French. A few months later the whole blogging thing came up and I was lucky to be a part of it. So now my (second) job is to feed you with information, exercises, vocabulary, grammar and stories about Germany and German language. For being a passionate videographer I´m trying to do this more and more by videos. If you have any wishes or needs of topics that should be treated here, please don´t hesitate to contact me via a comment field. I´m open to your suggestions (as long as they are not too individual) and will try to satisfy your needs.

What a shame, Germany wins with an English song!
Instead of German, representing Germany with English. Seems Germany think English is better than German, and they must have some inferiority complex.

Before I knew the song i wanted Germany to win cuz it has been 28 years since they won but with a song in their language.

And btw, Lena’s performance sucks, she can’t sing at all! It’s almost an insult that she won, there were many other talented singers.

    I totally agree with this.
