Today, we are looking at\u00a0<em>das Leben<\/em>. What other\u00a0<em>Thema\u00a0<\/em>(theme) inspires so many\u00a0<em>weise\u00a0<\/em>(wise) things to say than\u00a0life itself? (Image by Carlos Fernando Bendfeldt at Unsplash.com)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Literally: Life is not a pony farm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Life ain&#8217;t easy \/ Life is not a bed of roses<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is one of my favorite German\u00a0<em>Sprichw\u00f6rter<\/em>. Life can indeed not be easy, and that shows in tough situations. But a\u00a0<em>Ponyhof<\/em>? What do\u00a0ponies or farms to do with it?<\/p>\n<p>Well, it is the\u00a0<em>Idylle<\/em> (idyll) of a\u00a0<em>heile Welt\u00a0<\/em>(&#8220;whole world&#8221;), a place and time where everything is fun and great.\u00a0<em>Eltern\u00a0<\/em>(parents) take their child to a\u00a0<em>Ponyhof\u00a0<\/em>and enjoy their time. Nothing bad, intrusive or shocking happens &#8211; but\u00a0<em>das Leben<\/em>&#8230; Well, it is quite the opposite!<\/p>\n<p>There are many other\u00a0<em>Varianten\u00a0<\/em>(variants) on this\u00a0<em>Sprichwort<\/em>, from\u00a0<em>das Leben ist kein Zuckerschlecken\u00a0<\/em>(&#8220;life is no sugar-licking&#8221;) or\u00a0<em>das Leben ist kein Wunschkonzert\u00a0<\/em>(&#8220;life is not a request concert&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Especially with the <em>Wunschkonzert\u00a0<\/em>variant, but also with the other ones, it can mean something like\u00a0<em>beggars can&#8217;t be choosers\u00a0<\/em>as well,\u00a0because it is also used to show that you can&#8217;t always choose everything in life.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, the first time the\u00a0<em>Ponyhof\u00a0<\/em>was mentioned was in 2001 by the band <em>Die Schr\u00f6ders<\/em>, who also called their album after it. It became more widespread after it was mentioned in <em>Stromberg<\/em>, a highly successful German adaptation of the TV show &#8220;The Office&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>And what did people say before this?\u00a0<em>Das Leben ist kein Honiglecken<\/em> (&#8220;Life is no honey-licking&#8221;). Why? Because\u00a0<em>Honig\u00a0<\/em>was extremely valuable back in the day, and the ability to just eat&#8230; Well, it would make life easy to be in possession of so much of it, that you could simply eat it like that!<\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<p><em>Bevor ich in den Urlaub fahre, muss ich noch sehr viel lernen f\u00fcr die Klausur. Das Leben ist leider kein Ponyhof!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(Before I can go on holiday, I still need to learn a lot for the exam. Unfortunately, life is no pony farm!)<\/p>\n<p><em>Jenny hat ihre eigene Firma gegr\u00fcndet, aber sie wird noch jahrelang \u00dcberstunden arbeiten m\u00fcssen, um einen Profit zu machen. Das Leben ist kein Ponyhof!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(Jenny founded her own company, but she will have to work overtime for many years to make a profit. You stand in the middle of life &#8211; it is all around you, and you are at the center, able to reach out to all sides of life, and you are in control. It expresses this quite well.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, what this means differs per person. In Germany, it typically means being\u00a0<em>finanziell sicher<\/em>\u00a0(financially secure), having your own\u00a0<em>Haus\u00a0<\/em>(home), perhaps being\u00a0<em>verheiratet\u00a0<\/em>(married) and having <em>Kinder <\/em>(children). An upper-class German car and annual holidays are part of it as well.<\/p>\n<p>Now, that may sound posh, and it\u00a0<em>can\u00a0<\/em>be. But really, the expression reflects when you are in control of your life, and you reached things that people aspire to. As if people would like to reach that\u00a0<em>Mitte\u00a0<\/em>(center)!<\/p>\n<p>The word\u00a0<em>Lebensgef\u00fchl\u00a0<\/em>(&#8220;life feeling&#8221; &#8211; sense of life) also encapsulates this. You are living the things that make you feel alive to the fullest.<\/p>\n<p>When saying it about somebody, it is meant positively. Either because that person admires them, or because they appreciate that they found in life what makes them happy.<\/p>\n<p>It is a great thing!<\/p>\n<p><em>Sie scheint ja so gl\u00fccklich zu sein! Und das obwohl schon das dritte Kind kommt&#8230; Sie steht mitten im Leben!\u00a0Wie macht sie das nur? <\/em><\/p>\n<p>(She seems to be so happy! And that even though already the third child is coming&#8230; She has both feet on the ground! How does she do it?)<\/p>\n<p><em>Er ist mit 24 schon erfolgreicher B\u00e4nker. So jung, und doch steht er schon mitten im Leben!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(At age 24, he is already a successful banker.
