Guten Tag! It\u2019s holiday season and, having just come back from holiday myself, I started thinking about all of the phrases I used to communicate to the locals in different situations. There are many excellent posts in the blog archives on specific areas of holidays, like booking a hotel room in German, or how to navigate a German airport. In this refresher post I\u2019m going to give you some helpful travel\/holiday phrases which you can use when you go to a German-speaking country, but I\u2019m also going to link you to the various, existing<\/strong> posts on holiday\/travel topics, so we have a big resource<\/strong> for everything holiday-related in one place. I hope this will help you to filter through what you need and don’t need. \ud83d\ude42<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Note that I am using the formal greetings rather than the informal, because on your travels you\u2019ll be talking to people you don\u2019t know. So it\u2019s more polite to use the formal.<\/p>\n

Travel resource number one: Navigating A German Airport\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

COMMON PHRASES\/QUESTIONS<\/h2>\n

If approaching a stranger in a German-speaking country, you can start with an opening sentence like this one:<\/p>\n

Excuse me, could you help me, please? – Entschuldigung, k\u00f6<\/span><\/em><\/strong>nnen Sie mir bitte helfen?<\/strong> <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Following that, you can ask your question, such as: Wo ist der Bahnhof, bitte? – Where is the train station, please?<\/em><\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

Alternatively, you can <\/span>omit the request for help and <\/span>launch straight into your question by starting with an \u2018Entschuldigung\u2019 (excuse me)<\/strong>, <\/span>to make it more polite!<\/span> Here are a few examples of things you might ask:<\/span><\/p>\n

Excuse me, where is <hotel name>, please?<\/strong> – Entschuldigung, wo ist <hotel name>, bitte?<\/span><\/p>\n

Excuse me, where is the nearest cash machine, please?<\/strong> – Entschuldigung, wo ist der n\u00e4<\/span>chste Geldautomat, bitte?<\/span><\/p>\n

Excuse me, where are the toilets, please?<\/strong> – Entschuldigung, wo sind die Toiletten, bitte?<\/span><\/p>\n
