Guten Tag and Happy Hallowe\u2019en! OK, so we\u2019re a bit early, but to prepare for the most gruselig<\/strong> (creepy) time of year, I\u2019ll be bringing you a few posts related to some of the spookier aspects of Germany & German history. Today I am bringing you the story of Walpurga Hausm\u00e4nnin<\/strong> \u2013 one of Germany\u2019s most famous witches.<\/p>\n

When you think of famous witch trials, the countries that often spring to mind are the United States and the United Kingdom. But Germany was actually home to one of the biggest witch trials in all of Europe \u2013 the Hexenprozesse in W<\/span>\u00fcrzburg<\/strong> (W<\/span>\u00fc<\/span>rzburg witch trials), which took place between 1626 and 1631. <\/span>In fact, during the period of 1450 \u2013 1750, somewhere between 17,000 and 26,000 people were executed in Germany as part of these witch trials. <\/span><\/p>\n

So with Germany having such a huge history of Hexerei<\/strong> (witchcraft), what makes Walpurga Hausm\u00e4nnin so special?<\/span><\/p>\n

Walpurga Hausm\u00e4nnin was alive during the 1500s. She lived in Dillingen an der Donau in Bayern<\/strong> (Bavaria), where she worked as a Hebamme<\/strong> (midwife). She was accused of Hexerei<\/strong> (witchcraft), Vampirismus<\/strong> (vampirism) and Kindermord<\/strong> (child murder).<\/p>\n

Her case was significant because she confessed a lot more than she was expected to while being gefoltert<\/strong> (tortured), which gave people at the time a great insight into witchcraft. Read on if you\u2019d like to know what she confessed\u2026 and know that this next part is not for the faint of heart!<\/p>\n

Walpurga was a widow. One day, she said, she went to meet a man for casual sex, but the person who greeted her was actually a D\u00e4<\/span><\/strong>mon<\/strong> (demon) in disguise. He promised to rid her from Armut<\/strong> (poverty) if she agreed to sell her soul to the Teufel<\/strong> (devil) <\/span>and do whatever he asked of her<\/span>. Walpurga <\/span>was very poor, so she <\/span>agreed. <\/span>Walpurga was given a <\/span>Salbe<\/strong> (ointment), <\/span>which <\/span>she was instructed<\/span> to kill babies, animals and harvests with. Walpurga also confessed other things of a schrecklich<\/strong> (frightful) and gottlos<\/strong> (unholy) nature, such as how she was instructed to kill the babies she delivered, and then use their <\/span>hair and<\/span> bones for Zauberei<\/strong> (sorcery). <\/span>Walpurga was tortured continuously while she was in prison, <\/span>all the way up to her execution. <\/span>Before she was executed, her right hand was cut off \u2013 this was the hand she had made her Eid<\/strong> (oath) with as a midwife. She was burned at the stake and her ashes were thrown into a stream.<\/span><\/p>\n

I<\/span>t is unclear how much of Walpurga\u2019s story is Wahrheit<\/strong> (truth) and how much of it is Legende<\/strong> (legend). But one thing\u2019s for sure- it does make a good <\/span>German <\/span>Hallowe\u2019en story! <\/span><\/p>\n
