Guten Tag, und frohes neues Jahr! Hello, and Happy New Year! I hope you\u2019ve all had a wonderful start to 2019. In this post we will clear up some unfinished business from 2018, and that is discovering what the German Wort des Jahres <\/strong>(Word of the Year) of 2018 is!<\/p>\n

Each year, the Gesellschaft f<\/b>\u00fc<\/b><\/span>r deutsche Sprache (GfdS)<\/b><\/span> \u2013 The German Language Association \u2013 picks a word as their ‘Word of the Year’. This is often a word related to a prominent topic in the country during the year, and is often interesting from a linguistic perspective, too (as is sometimes assumed, the Word of the Year has nothing to do with how often the word has been used, for example). What\u2019s great about learning the German Word of the Year is that it gives us an insight into Germany\u2019s current events, politics and culture, whilst teaching us some quirks of the language, too. So without further ado, let\u2019s take a look at what the <\/span>Wort des Jahres 2018<\/b><\/span> is!<\/span><\/p>\n

The Wort des Jahres 2018 is: die Hei<\/span>\u00df<\/span>zeit<\/span><\/h2>\n

Die Hei<\/b><\/span>\u00df<\/b><\/span>zeit <\/b><\/span>is a reference to the extremely hot weather Germany <\/span>experienced <\/span>during 2018, and a reference to <\/span>der Klimawandel<\/b><\/span> (<\/span>climate change<\/span>)<\/span> in general, which was a huge topic <\/span>not just in Germany, but the world over.<\/span><\/p>\n

Die Hei<\/span>\u00df<\/span>zeit literally means <\/span>\u2018the hot age\u2019<\/b><\/span>, which is a play on the word <\/span>die Eis<\/b><\/span>zeit<\/b><\/span> \u2013 t<\/span>he Ice Age.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

The runner up for Wort des Jahres was <\/span>die Funklochrepublik<\/b><\/span> (literally \u2018radio hole republic\u2019 – a reference to the amount of places in Germany that don\u2019t have reception), and in third place was <\/span>die Ankerzentren<\/b><\/span> (literally \u2018anchor centres\u2019 – admission centres for refugees). This word in particular is interesting because the first part of it \u2013 Anker – is an acronym:<\/span><\/p>\n
