Unless you have been living under a rock the past few years, then you will know it is common knowledge that our bees are dying out in the whole world.

Why are bees so important?
The reason why bees are so important to our ecosystem is because they pollinate our flowers. When they land on a flower, the pollen sticks to their body. When they fly away and land on the next flower they leave tiny bits of pollen – which allows our flowers to grow and produce food.
Without bees we wouldn’t just have any honey, but our plants would no longer grow the food (fruit, vegetables) that we need.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-10476 size-medium aligncenter" alt="" width="350" height="232" / src="https://blogs.transparent.com/german/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2019/02/bee-170551_1920-350x232.jpg" srcset="https://blogs.transparent.com/german/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2019/02/bee-170551_1920-350x232.jpg 350w, https://blogs.transparent.com/german/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2019/02/bee-170551_1920-768x510.jpg 768w, https://blogs.transparent.com/german/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2019/02/bee-170551_1920-1024x680.jpg 1024w, https://blogs.transparent.com/german/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2019/02/bee-170551_1920.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px" />

What is Bavaria doing about it?
Germany is known as a very enviromentally friendly and efficient country, what with it’s renewable energy sources and bike friendly cities. And now Bavaria has made a petition – Rettet die Bienen! to help save the bees. From the 31st of January to the 13th of February German citizens have the opportunity to sign the petition in town halls.

What will the Petition do?
Bavaria wants to stop/use less of pesticides which are harming the bees (not just bees, but also butterflies and other wildlife) and therefore have a more ecological agriculture. They want to increase the organic food market in the hope that it will stop the decline of the bees. More than half a million people have signed the petition and there is still one more day to go!

I personally think that it’s great that Bavaria is really fighting for our environment (and also our food produce!) and it’s amazing to see how many people around Munich are also on board with this. My boyfriend and friends have also already signed the petition – I sadly can’t as I am not a German citizen yet (if you’ve read my other post, you will know I have applied for a dual nationality, it’s just taking longer than planned).

Is your country doing anything similar to create a more ecological system that we live in?

Thanks for reading,

Larissa

In the last few weeks there has been a whirlwind of advertising through banners, flyers and social media posts about saving the bees.
