Welcome to the first Sayings + Expressions of 2019! February here in Germany has been an absolutely weird month. Whereas it is normally April (April macht was er will!<\/em>) that has the surprising weather, February had strangely high temperatures. It is March now, and the sun is out – it is beautiful here in Germany! It seems that Spring has sprung – so let’s celebrate the end of ice and snow with some German sayings and expressions!<\/p>\n

Schnee von gestern<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Literally: It is snow of yesterday<\/strong><\/p>\n

old news; water under the bridge<\/em><\/p>\n

That awful weather of the past few months? Ah, that is\u00a0Schnee von gestern!\u00a0<\/em>(old news). Just like in English,\u00a0Schnee von gestern<\/em> is said of things already forgotten and forgiven or of things that are simply no longer up-to-date. Like how iPods are Schnee von gestern<\/em>. But where does this come from?<\/p>\n

Fran\u00e7ois Villon (from Commons.wikimedia.org, public domain)<\/p><\/div>\n

Most likely, it originates from the 15th century. The best known\u00a0Dichter <\/em>(poet) of the late\u00a0Mittelalter\u00a0<\/em>(Middle Ages), Fran\u00e7ois Villon, wrote a\u00a0Gedicht\u00a0<\/em>(poem) about women from former times and stories. He would write of their amazing beauty and appeal, while wondering where they are now, asking o\u00f9 sont les neiges d’antan?\u00a0<\/i>(where is last year’s snow?). In German, this translates to\u00a0Wo ist der Schnee vom vergangenen Jahr?\u00a0<\/em>So not as short as\u00a0Schnee von gestern<\/em>, but it’s the same gist.<\/p>\n

On to the\u00a0Ausdruck\u00a0<\/em>(expression)!<\/p>\n

Literally: The cow is off the ice<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hard work pays off<\/em><\/p>\n

to rescue the situation<\/em><\/p>\n

Die Kuh vom Eis holen<\/em> or\u00a0schieben, ziehen, kriegen, f\u00fchren\u00a0<\/em>or whatever other way you have to get the cow off the ice, refers to saving a situation. And mostly, it is quite the difficult situation. Getting a cow to move is no easy task, especially on ice! But where does this funny\u00a0Ausdruck\u00a0<\/em>come from?<\/p>\n

It most likely originates in the everyday life of a\u00a0Bauer\u00a0<\/em>(farmer).\u00a0K\u00fche\u00a0<\/em>(cows) are more likely to simply stand around when they are in a\u00a0brenzlige situation <\/em>(hairy situation). And so to prevent the\u00a0Kuh\u00a0<\/em>from freezing on the ice or falling into the water, they must find a way to get the cow off the ice!<\/p>\n

Luckily something not to worry about anymore now that the ice is gone!<\/p>\n
