As you may know from previous posts, each year the <strong>Gesellschaft f\u00fcr deutsche Sprache (GfdS)<\/strong> \u2013 The German Language Association \u2013 picks a word as their<strong> Wort des Jahres<\/strong> &#8211; Word of the Year. They also publish the top 10 most voted for out of all of the words submitted. You can read about the 2018 winner, plus the two runners up, in this blog post<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-word-of-the-year-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> here.<\/a> But what about the other seven words that made the top 10? Surely they have interesting stories behind them, too. Today we\u2019ll look briefly words 7-10. Not only is this a good way to see the creativity of German language in action, but it gives a great insight into what kinds of political and cultural topics were being discussed at the time. If any of these interest you, I hope this gives you a base to do further reading on them.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the words in places 7-10. Platz<\/strong> (7th place) is the word <strong>das<\/strong> <strong>Diesel-Fahrverbot<\/strong> (also sometimes written without the hyphen: Dieselfahrverbot) &#8211;<em> \u2018diesel driving ban\u2019.<\/em> In 2018 it was announced that several cities would start to ban diesel cars from being driven in them. This relates to older diesel cars who do not meet the current environmental standards. The &#8216;diesel-driving-ban&#8217; is a way of being more <strong>umweltfreundlich<\/strong> (environmentally friendly). Hamburg and Stuttgart have already enforced the ban.<\/p>\n<h3>Handelskrieg<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10691 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/04\/flag-3371279_1280-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/04\/flag-3371279_1280-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/04\/flag-3371279_1280-350x233.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/04\/flag-3371279_1280-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/04\/flag-3371279_1280.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 501px) 100vw, 501px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In<strong> 8. Platz<\/strong> (8th place) is <strong>Handelskrieg<\/strong> &#8211;<em> \u2018trade war\u2019.<\/em> This is made up of the words <strong>der Handel<\/strong> (trade) and <strong>der Krieg<\/strong> (war). Platz<\/strong> (9th place) is the fairly self-explanatory<strong> Brexit-Chaos<\/strong>. One thing to note here is that, although it looks like an English word, <strong>das Chaos<\/strong> is the German word, too. Platz<\/strong> (10th place) is <strong>die Mutter aller Probleme<\/strong> &#8211;<em> \u2018the mother of all problems\u2019<\/em>, which is the controversial statement politician Horst Seehofer made to describe<strong> die Migration<\/strong> (migration) in Germany today. In response, Angela Merkel said,<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Ich sage, die Migrationsfrage stellt uns vor Herausvorderungen. Und dabei gibt es auch Probleme.\u2019<br \/>\n<\/strong><em> \u2018I say, migration presents us with challenges.
