Because of a <em>Streik\u00a0<\/em>(strike) of UFO. Who&#8217;s UFO and why are they doing this? Let&#8217;s find out.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What&#8217;s going on?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Arbeitskampf der Flugbegleiter: Gewerkschaft UFO will diese Woche bei Lufthansa streiken\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/i6NM_sENSio?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Unabh\u00e4ngige Flugbegleiter Organisation (UFO) e.V.\u00a0<\/em>(independent steward organisation, UFO) announced a\u00a0<em>Streik\u00a0<\/em>today andtomorrow, starting Thursday at 0.00 running through Friday 23.59 &#8211; so 48 hours in total. The UFO is a <em>Gewerkschaft\u00a0<\/em>(labor union) for flight attendants, and by striking, many flights can not take off. Specifically, UFO is striking Lufthansa flights, since Lufthansa is refusing to engage in <em>Tarifverhandlungen\u00a0<\/em>(pay bargaining). UFO demands higher <em>L\u00f6hne <\/em>(pay) and <em>Zulagen <\/em>(extra pay).<\/p>\n<p>Because of this\u00a0<em>Streik<\/em>, 1300\u00a0<em>Fl\u00fcge\u00a0<\/em>(flights) have to be <em>abgesagt <\/em>(cancelled), affecting around 180,000 <em>Passagiere\u00a0<\/em>(passengers). That&#8217;s a huge number! To\u00a0<em>entgegenkommen\u00a0<\/em>(accommodate) affected\u00a0<em>Passagiere<\/em>, Lufthansa offers the possibility to\u00a0<em>umbuchen\u00a0<\/em>(rebook) a flight on Thursday or Friday to another flight in the next 10 days &#8211; whether the flight is cancelled or not. On\u00a0<em>Fl\u00fcge\u00a0<\/em>within Germany, a flight can also be rebooked to a\u00a0<em>Bahnticket\u00a0<\/em>(train ticket).<\/p>\n<p>Lufthansa <em>verurteilt <\/em>(condemns) the <em>Streik<\/em> &#8220;<em>aufs Sch\u00e4rfste<\/em>&#8221; (utterly). The German\u00a0<em>Fluggesellschaft\u00a0<\/em>(airline) defends its position of not entering <em>Verhandlungen <\/em>by claiming that the <em>Vorstand\u00a0<\/em>(board) of UFO is not\u00a0<em>vertretungsberechtigt\u00a0<\/em>(authorized to represent). Also known as an\u00a0<em>Ausstand<\/em>, a <em>Streik\u00a0<\/em>is an essential tool for\u00a0<em>Gewerkschaften\u00a0<\/em>to push their interests in the well-established\u00a0<em>Arbeitskampf\u00a0<\/em>(industrial conflict) in Germany. While this sounds quite violent, it really isn&#8217;t. <i>Arbeitskampf <\/i>is, in legal German, &#8220;<em>die von den Parteien des Arbeitslebens vorgenommene St\u00f6rung des\u00a0Arbeitsfriedens, um durch Druck ein bestimmtes Ziel oder Fernziel zu erreichen<\/em>&#8221; (the disruption of labor peace, planned by the parties of working life, to reach a certain goal or long-term goal through pressure).<\/p>\n<p>During a\u00a0<em>Streik<\/em>, the <em>Arbeitgeber\u00a0<\/em>(employer) is not required to pay wages according to the principle &#8220;<em>ohne Arbeit kein Lohn&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>(without work no wage). In turn, the\u00a0<em>Gewerkschaft\u00a0<\/em>usually pays some sort of compensation to those on strike from the\u00a0<em>Streikkasse\u00a0<\/em>(strike fund).<\/p>\n<p><em>Streiks\u00a0<\/em>have increased in recent years, but are still quite uncommon. In international comparisons, Germans don&#8217;t strike a lot. Between 2005 and 2013, 16\u00a0<em>Arbeitstage\u00a0<\/em>(work days) were missing per year per 1000 employees. In France, on the other hand, this is 139 days, in Denmark 135 and in Canada 102.<\/p>\n<p>But even so,\u00a0<em>Streiks\u00a0<\/em>can be very effective to force the hand of the employer.
