There are many false friends between German and English. False friends are words we recognise in German because they are spelled the same as an English word. They do not, however, mean the same as the English word. Sometimes this mix-up with false friends can lead to confusion, laughter, embarrassment\u2026 and sometimes, it can lead to your Twitter account being banned for 12 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Bahnschrift, sans-serif\">Earlier this month, a Twitter user from Austria was banned from using the social media platform Twitter for writing these words:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u2018<span style=\"font-family: Bahnschrift, sans-serif\">die boomer\u2019<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Bahnschrift, sans-serif\">According to the message the user received, his account was blocked because this tweet of his (<strong>\u2018die boomer\u2019<\/strong>) displayed <b>der Hass-Inhalt <\/b>(hate content).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Bahnschrift, sans-serif\">The message went on to say:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Bahnschrift, sans-serif\"><b>Du darfst keine Gewalt gegen andere aufgrund ihrer Rasse, ethnischen Zugeh\u00f6rigkeit, nationalen Herkunft, sexuellen Orientierung, ihres Geschlechts, ihrer geschlechtlichen Identit\u00e4t, religi\u00f6sen Zugeh\u00f6rigkeit, ihres Alters, wegen Behinderungen oder ernster Krankheiten f\u00f6rdern oder andere aus diesen Gr\u00fcnden bedrohen oder bel\u00e4stigen.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Bahnschrift, sans-serif\">(\u2018Promoting violence against others based on their race, ethnic origin, nationality, sexuality, gender, gender identity, religion, age, disability or serious illness is not permitted, nor is threatening or harassing people because of these things.\u2019)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Bahnschrift, sans-serif\">But the Twitter user had done none of these things. He had simply written \u2018the boomer\u2019 in his native language.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11243\" style=\"width: 518px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11243\" class=\" wp-image-11243\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/11\/youtuber-2838945_1280-1024x732.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"508\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/11\/youtuber-2838945_1280-1024x732.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/11\/youtuber-2838945_1280-350x250.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/11\/youtuber-2838945_1280-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/11\/youtuber-2838945_1280.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11243\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">image via pixabay<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Bahnschrift, sans-serif\">The German word <b>\u2018die\u2019 <\/b>is the feminine article for the word \u2018the\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Bahnschrift, sans-serif\">But because this word appears in English, too, the tweet was read as a threat towards the \u2018boomer\u2019 in question (the word \u2018boomer\u2019 here refers to someone from the Baby Boom generation).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Bahnschrift, sans-serif\">Because Twitter is designed to detect and block any hateful speech on its platform, it picked up on the word <b>\u2018die\u2019<\/b> and blocked the user\u2019s account. The English-trained algorithm must not have been familiar with German false friends!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Bahnschrift, sans-serif\">False friends can mean even the smallest of words go on to create huge misunderstandings. In this case, that word was the innocent German word \u2018the\u2019! <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-false-friends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">You can read more about German false friends here.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Bahnschrift, sans-serif\">Had the user really written \u2018die boomer\u2019 in German, the tweet would have read: <b>\u2018stirb, boomer\u2019. Stirb<\/b> comes from the German verb <b>sterben <\/b>\u2013 to die.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Bahnschrift, sans-serif\">Others have previously picked up on the false friend <b>\u2018die\u2019 <\/b>and used it in clever ways.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Bahnschrift, sans-serif\"> An old episode of The Simpsons shows Sideshow Bob in court, accused of trying to kill Bart Simpson. He denies it, so the judge says to him, \u201cWhat about that tattoo on your chest that says \u2018die Bart, die\u2019?\u201d to which he replies, \u201cThat\u2019s German for \u2018the Bart, the\u2019\u201d.
