We have previously looked at Germany\u2019s <strong>Wort des Jahres<\/strong> (Word of the Year) and its <strong>Unwort des Jahres<\/strong> (Non-word of the Year) 2019 in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-word-of-the-year-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this post<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-word-of-the-year-2019-runners-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this one (runners up)<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-non-word-of-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> this one<\/a>. But what about other, German-speaking countries? Do they also have \u2018words of the year\u2019 in Austria and German-speaking Switzerland?<\/p>\n<p>The answer is yes.<\/p>\n<h3>Wort des Jahres: die Schweiz<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_11409\" style=\"width: 583px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11409\" class=\" wp-image-11409\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/01\/switzerland-3015833_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"573\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/01\/switzerland-3015833_640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/01\/switzerland-3015833_640-350x221.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 573px) 100vw, 573px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11409\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via Pixabay<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Swiss <strong>Wort des Jahres<\/strong> is chosen each year by the department of applied linguistics at <strong>Universit\u00e4t Z\u00fcrich<\/strong> (Zurich University). Like the German one, the word is chosen based on its relevance in the country throughout the year (not how often it\u2019s been used, for example). The Swiss <strong>Wort des Jahres<\/strong> is <strong>die Klimajugend<\/strong>, which translates to \u2018climate youth\u2019 <strong>(das Klima<\/strong> \u2013 climate; <strong>die Jugend<\/strong> \u2013 youth). This word references the young people who have campaigned about climate change over the past year. It ties in nicely with the German <strong>Unwort des Jahres<\/strong> this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-non-word-of-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>die Klimahysterie!<\/strong> <\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Wort des Jahres: \u00d6sterreich<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_11410\" style=\"width: 578px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11410\" class=\" wp-image-11410\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/01\/austria-3045568_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"568\" height=\"402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/01\/austria-3045568_640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/01\/austria-3045568_640-350x248.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 568px) 100vw, 568px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11410\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via Pixabay<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Austrian <strong>Wort des Jahres<\/strong> is selected by the Society for Austrian German (<strong>GS\u00d6D \u2013 Gesellschaft f\u00fcr \u00d6sterreichisches Deutsch<\/strong>). This year, the word is a strange one: <strong>Ibiza.<\/strong> There was a big <strong>Skandal<\/strong> (scandal) in Austria involving former Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache. Just a few days before EU elections, hidden camera footage showed Strache offering information in return for campaign help from a fake Russian backer. The video was filmed in a villa in Ibiza, and so the whole thing came to be known as the<strong> Ibiza-Aff\u00e4re<\/strong> (Ibiza Affair).<\/p>\n<p>The phrase <strong>b\u2019soffene G\u2019schicht<\/strong> is the <strong>Unwort des Jahres<\/strong> (Non-word of the Year). It means \u2018a drunken story\u2019 and is how Strache referred to the filmed evening in Ibiza later on.<\/p>\n<p>The phrase<strong> b\u2019soffene G\u2019schicht<\/strong> is not standard German, but Austrian dialect, which often misses out letters. The full phrase would be: <strong>(eine) besoffene Geschichte.<\/strong> The word <strong>besoffen<\/strong> is often used in Austrian (and Bavarian) dialect instead of <strong>betrunken<\/strong>, the German word for <em>drunk<\/em>.
