When someone is asking you in German for a particular noun, for example, when you are asked if you have or posses something, e.g. time<\/em>, a brother<\/em>, a sister<\/em>, children<\/em>, a pen<\/em>, etc., you have to use a declined form of the word kein<\/em><\/strong> in order to negate your statement.<\/p>\n

For example, when I ask you the following questions:<\/p>\n

1. Hast du Zeit? \u2013 Do you have time?<\/p>\n

2. Hast du Hunger. \u2013 Are you hungry? (lit. Do you have hunger?)<\/p>\n

3. Hast du eine Schwester? \u2013 Do you have a sister?<\/p>\n

4. Haben sie einen Sohn? \u2013 Do you have a son?<\/p>\n

5. Haben Sie Kinder? \u2013 Do you have children?<\/p>\n

6. Hast du einen Stift? \u2013 Do you have a pen?<\/p>\n

The correct German responses would be:<\/p>\n

1. Nein, ich habe keine Zeit. \u2013 No, I have no time. \/ No, I don\u2019t have time.<\/p>\n

2. Nein, ich habe keinen Hunger. \u2013 No, I am not hungry. (lit. No, I have no hunger.)<\/p>\n

So, all you have to do is to add the letter k<\/em><\/strong> to the indefinite articles and you will always obtain the corresponding negation word.<\/p>\n

Please note, that you can only negate you statement with kein<\/em><\/strong> when the noun you are talking about is either used without articles or with indefinite articles.<\/p>\n

Without articles:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sie isst \u00c4pfel. \u2013 She eats apples.<\/p>\n

Sie isst keine \u00c4pfel. \u2013 She doesn\u2019t eat apples. (lit. She eats no apples.)<\/p>\n
