{"id":11936,"date":"2020-07-28T17:48:23","date_gmt":"2020-07-28T17:48:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/?p=11936"},"modified":"2020-07-28T17:48:23","modified_gmt":"2020-07-28T17:48:23","slug":"german-wines-a-closer-look","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/german-wines-a-closer-look\/","title":{"rendered":"German Wines &#8211; A Closer Look"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Continuing on from my last blog post (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/an-introduction-to-german-wines\/\">An Introduction to German Wines<\/a>), we will expand upon this topic and talk about the qualities and classifications of wine in Germany.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since 1971 there are four classifications for German wine:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Deutscher Wein\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">German wine<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Landwein\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">regional wine<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Qualit\u00e4tswein (QbA)<\/b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">quality wine<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Pr\u00e4dikatswein<\/b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">predicate wine<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These are determined through the level of sugar and ripeness when harvested.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first two (<\/span><b>Deutscher Wein <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><b>Landwein<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) belong to the category of simple table wine. The last two (<\/span><b>Qualit\u00e4tswein <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><b>Pr\u00e4dikatswein<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) belong to the category of quality wine. The grapes are usually ripe or just a tiny bit under ripe. This wine doesn&#8217;t have to be tested, isn&#8217;t often exported, and is enjoyed almost entirely by locals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Landwein<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This wine is more superior than the <\/span><b>Deutscher Wein<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, you will find it <\/span><b>trocken <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or <\/span><b>halb trocken <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(dry or half dry). The wine must come from one of the 13 wine regions in Germany (some of these regions you can find in my previous post <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/an-introduction-to-german-wines\/\">here<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Qualit\u00e4tswein<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These wines have to be tested and adhere to the regional wine laws. They also have to have an AP number (AP stands for <\/span><b>Amtliche Pr\u00fcfungsnummer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8211; official testing number), which is printed on the label and contains information about the region and producer of the wine. The tests make sure that the grapes are all from the same German region and that they have the right quality. They are also often chaptalized (adding sugar to the unfermented wine to increase the alcohol percentage).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Pr\u00e4dikatswein<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These wines are quality wines with certain specifications. They are not allowed to be chaptalized and range from <\/span><b>trocken <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to <\/span><b>s\u00fc\u00df <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(dry to sweet).
