In exactly one month, it will be <strong>Weihnachten<\/strong> (Christmas)! And, for obvious reasons, Weihnachten is going to look quite different this year. The aim is to allow people to see their families at Christmas time, whilst keeping everyone as safe as possible. Here\u2019s how it\u2019s likely to look in Germany:<\/p>\n<h3>Kontaktregeln f\u00fcr Weihnachten \u2013 Rules for Christmas contact<\/h3>\n<p><strong>23. Dezember \u2013 1. Januar:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More than two <strong>Haushalte<\/strong> (households) will be allowed to meet;<\/li>\n<li>This will be for a maximum of 10 people, but under 14s don\u2019t count;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Selbstisolation<\/strong> (self-isolation) is encouraged for as many days as possible in the run-up to December 23rd, to help prevent any possibility of the virus spreading over <strong>die festliche Zeit<\/strong> (the festive period);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kirchen<\/strong> (churches) may still go ahead with festive ceremonies, but on a smaller scale;<\/li>\n<li>The traditional <strong>Silvesterfeuerwerk<\/strong> (New Year\u2019s fireworks) will be discouraged\/banned in some public places.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_12197\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12197\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12197\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/11\/roman-kraft-4mx1y3Z3-Ys-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/11\/roman-kraft-4mx1y3Z3-Ys-unsplash.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/11\/roman-kraft-4mx1y3Z3-Ys-unsplash-350x234.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12197\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Roman Kraft on Unsplash.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Germany\u2019s public celebrations will also look very different this year, as the majority of its 3,000 outdoor <strong>Weihnachtsm\u00e4rkte<\/strong>\u00a0(Christmas markets) are being cancelled. These markets are like the heart and soul of Germany in the run up to Christmas, and are a great source of tourism for the country as well, so this is no doubt a blow to the retailers, the residents, and the German economy.<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>Since things will be different this year, I thought this would be a good opportunity to relive the magic of a German Christmas via the blog. Hopefully will this not only lift our spirits, but remind us that there are so many things we <em>can<\/em> still enjoy this Christmas, restrictions or not.
