It is not remembered as a good day, as it refers to one of the worst days of the 1929 financial crisis. The shopping spree Friday exists in Germany, too, though. In that last post, I provided some vocabulary to make shopping in Germany a bit easier on this day. But today, let&#8217;s do something else &#8211; let&#8217;s have a look at some\u00a0<em>Werbekampagnen\u00a0<\/em>(ad campaigns) in Germany around\u00a0<em>Black Friday<\/em>. It lists different\u00a0<em>Black Friday-Angebote\u00a0<\/em>(Black Friday offers) available at various stores. Like all over these days, in Germany Black Friday transformed into a week- or even month-long event. So you are likely to see <em>Black Friday Week <\/em>or <em>Black Week<\/em>, for example. And yes, you&#8217;ll always just see it in English &#8211; <em>Schwarze Woche <\/em>simply sounds dark and depressing.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/de.statista.com\/infografik\/20107\/meistgekaufte-produkte-am-black-friday-in-deutschland\/\">Statista<\/a>, especially\u00a0<em>Elektronikartikel\u00a0<\/em>(electronics) and\u00a0<em>Mode und Accessoires\u00a0<\/em>(fashion and accessories), together making up half of the <em>Schn\u00e4ppchenk\u00e4ufe <\/em>(deal shopping) done around Black Friday. So let&#8217;s have a look at those categories.<\/p>\n<p>Playing into the 2020 blues, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samsung.com\/de\/offer\/black-friday\/2020\/galaxy-s20-angebot\/?cid=de_pd_display_black-friday-sale_BF_ecommerce_black-friday-sale_banner_mainslider-imho2_none\">Samsung<\/a> lists its <em>Angebote\u00a0<\/em>with the caption\u00a0<em>Dieses Jahr braucht bunte Deals\u00a0<\/em>(This year needs colorful deals) and\u00a0<em>So wird aus &#8217;20 doch noch was!\u00a0<\/em>(This way, 2020 will be something after all!). Saturn, a big box electronics store has its history with <em>Werbekampagnen<\/em>. It was criticized for its long-time slogan <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geiz_ist_geil\"><em>Geiz ist geil\u00a0<\/em>(&#8220;stinginess is awesome&#8221;, basically)<\/a>, as it encouraged consumers to only look at the lowest price, making it difficult for smaller competitors. But that is a story for another time. Its attitude definitely changed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saturn.de\/\">now only advertising<\/a> with <em>die besten Angebote des Jahres <\/em>(&#8220;The best deals of the year&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Otto is a cornerstone of German online shopping. It&#8217;s a store famous for its <em>Ottokatalog\u00a0<\/em>(Otto catalogue), a behemoth that offers all kinds of products that can be ordered by telephone or online. It offers electronics, homeware, furniture, fashion and more. Like many things, most of that has gone online these days. Some say it&#8217;s just a <em>Rabattschlacht\u00a0<\/em>(discount battle) that leads to buying\u00a0<em>Dinge, die niemand braucht <\/em>(things nobody needs). And that, in turn, may even make you less\u00a0<em>gl\u00fccklich\u00a0<\/em>(happy) than you were before owning that new, shiny item! And many people are simply annoyed at all the busy streets and long\u00a0<em>Schlangen\u00a0<\/em>(lines) everywhere. As Vicky Isabelle Bargel,\u00a0<em>Redakteurin\u00a0<\/em>(editor) at t3n, a German tech news site, puts it: <em>Des einen Schn\u00e4ppchenmarathon ist des anderen Shoppingh\u00f6lle\u00a0<\/em>(One&#8217;s deal marathon is another&#8217;s shopping hell).<\/p>\n<p>In her <a href=\"https:\/\/t3n.de\/news\/kritik-black-friday-arrogant-1229702\/\"><em>Kommentar\u00a0<\/em>(opinion piece)<\/a>, Ms Bargel says she thinks the\u00a0<em>Konsumkritik <\/em>(consumer criticism) is <em>arrogant <\/em>(arrogant). It would be <em>abgehoben <\/em>(out of touch) to criticize the <em>Schn\u00e4ppchenj\u00e4ger <\/em>(deal hunters), because &#8220;<em>nicht jeder kann es sich in der Vorweihnachtszeit leisten, auf Angebote zu verzichten<\/em>&#8221; (not everyone can afford to pass up on deals in the pre-Christmas season), she says.<\/p>\n<p>What everyone can agree on, however, is that it&#8217;s not a bad idea to avoid the <em>Kaufrausch\u00a0<\/em>(shopping frenzy) and to heed the\u00a0<em>Schn\u00e4ppchen\u00a0<\/em>that aren&#8217;t\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">really<\/span>\u00a0<em>Schn\u00e4ppchen<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you think about Black Friday, and how is it in your country?
