And yet, it happened this weekend in Germany. Suddenly, Germany was hit with a big winter storm. It meant real\u00a0<em>Wintereinbruch\u00a0<\/em>(onset of winter) in Germany. Starting in my home state of\u00a0<em>Niedersachsen\u00a0<\/em>(Lower Saxony), the\u00a0<em>Schneesturm\u00a0<\/em>(snow storm) swept across the country. What happened? And what&#8217;s a\u00a0<em>Flockdown<\/em>?<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Snow everywhere: A <em>Massiver Wintereinbruch<\/em><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"#Flockdown - Eisige K\u00e4lte und Schnee: Ein extremer Wintertag in Deutschland\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HsjCdeWYG10?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tagesschau.de\/inland\/wetter-winter-109.html\">As the\u00a0<em>Tagesschau\u00a0<\/em>reported<\/a>, Germany saw a <em>massiver Wintereinbruch\u00a0<\/em>(massive onset of winter) this weekend. With\u00a0<em>eisigen Temperaturen\u00a0<\/em>(icy temperatures) and\u00a0<em>starke Schneef\u00e4lle\u00a0<\/em>(heavy snowfalls), the <em>D<\/em><em>eutscher Wetterdienst (DWD)<\/em> (German Weather Service) called it an <em>au\u00dfergew\u00f6hnlicher Wintereinbruch\u00a0<\/em>(extraordinary start of winter). Within 24 hours, up to 40 centimeters of snow fell.<\/p>\n<p>With temperatures of down to -20\u00b0C (-4\u00b0F), precautions were taken. In Berlin, for example, more\u00a0<em>Notunterk\u00fcnfte\u00a0<\/em>(emergency shelters) were made available to make sure <em>Obdachlose\u00a0<\/em>(homeless people) wouldn&#8217;t freeze. There were many\u00a0<em>Zugausf\u00e4lle <\/em>(train cancellations), and the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/train-fare-dodging-in-germany\/\"><em>Deutsche Bahn<\/em><\/a> offered\u00a0<em>\u00dcbernachtungsm\u00f6glichkeiten\u00a0<\/em>(accommodation options) for\u00a0<em>gestrandete Reisende\u00a0<\/em>(stranded travelers). Furthermore, you should avoid driving. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/de\/e-mails-und-videos-sind-bei-kindern-beliebt\/a-56496311\"><em>Deutsche Welle <\/em>reported<\/a> that\u00a0<em>Glatteis\u00a0<\/em>(black ice) was going to be a problem on roads. To this effect, the DWD warned on Saturday: <em>&#8220;Fahren Sie nur mit Winterausr\u00fcstung und vermeiden Sie grunds\u00e4tzlich Autofahrten!&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>(Only drive with winter equipment and avoid car drives where possible!)<\/p>\n<h1><strong>A different story:\u00a0<em>Sahara-Staub <\/em>in the south<\/strong><\/h1>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"de\" dir=\"ltr\">An vielen Orten in Europa war heute der Himmel ungew\u00f6hnlich gelb. A <em>gelber Himmel <\/em>(yellow sky) was visible in some parts of Europe this past weekend, including in Bavaria and Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg. <em>Sahara-Staub <\/em>(Sahara dust) was swept up and carried all the way across the Mediterranean Sea to land on <em>Skipisten <\/em>(ski pistes) in the Alps. On social media, the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/flockdown?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Ehashtag\">#flockdown<\/a> is going around. It&#8217;s a play on words made up of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/zoom-meetings-in-german\/\">coronavirus-related\u00a0<em>Lockdown<\/em><\/a> currently in place in Germany and the German word\u00a0<em>Schneeflocke\u00a0<\/em>(snowflake), or simply, <em>Flocke\u00a0<\/em>(flake).\u00a0<em>Flockdown\u00a0<\/em>refers to this event of strong <em>Schneefall <\/em>and <em>Schneest\u00fcrme <\/em>that also forces people to stay home.<\/p>\n<p>But that doesn&#8217;t mean people couldn&#8217;t go outside and enjoy the snow a bit. Whether it&#8217;s a nice\u00a0<em>Winterwanderung <\/em>(winter hike),\u00a0<em>Schlitten fahren <\/em>(to sleigh), a <em>Schneeballschlacht <\/em>(snowball fight) or the good old <em>Schneemann bauen <\/em>(to build a snowman), Germans could also find fun in this extreme weather.<\/p>\n<p>This extreme weather is expected to stay in Germany for at least another week.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What would you do in this weather?
