English spelling is a mess. I don’t think that anybody would argue with that. German spelling, on the other hand, is pretty straightforward! Simply pronounce every single letter, and you’re already halfway there. However, German is not free from some confusing spelling itself. Let’s take a look at some of that. For example, the\u00a0s\/<\/em>sch<\/em>. Why do they sometimes sound the same? And how do you know which one to use?<\/p>\n

In this post, I’ll only discuss\u00a0s\/sch\u00a0<\/em>at the\u00a0beginning of a word<\/strong>. Things are different with\u00a0s\/sch\u00a0<\/em>in the middle of a word. That’s for another post!<\/p>\n

There are many German words<\/a> that begin with a\u00a0s\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0sch<\/em>. For example:<\/p>\n

die Sch<\/strong>l<\/span>ange\u00a0<\/em>(snake)<\/p>\n

der S<\/strong>t<\/span>ein\u00a0<\/em>(stone)<\/p>\n

der S<\/strong>p<\/span>iegel\u00a0<\/em>(mirror)<\/p>\n

die Sch<\/strong>w<\/span>angerschaft\u00a0<\/em>(pregnancy)<\/p>\n

der Sch<\/strong>l<\/span>ag\u00a0<\/em>(blow)<\/p>\n
