I don&#8217;t think that anybody would argue with that. German spelling, on the other hand, is pretty straightforward! Simply pronounce every single letter, and you&#8217;re already halfway there. However, German is not free from some confusing spelling itself. Let&#8217;s take a look at some of that. For example, the\u00a0<em>s\/<\/em><em>sch<\/em>. Why do they sometimes sound the same? Things are different with\u00a0<em>s\/sch\u00a0<\/em>in the middle of a word. That&#8217;s for another post!<\/p>\n<p>There are <a href=\"https:\/\/de.thefreedictionary.com\/Browse-s\">many German words<\/a> that begin with a\u00a0<em>s\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>sch<\/em>. However, the\u00a0<em>s\u00a0<\/em>can become an\u00a0<em>sch<\/em>. When is this the case?<\/p>\n<p>You may notice how the\u00a0<em>s\u00a0<\/em>is a normal\u00a0<em>s\u00a0<\/em>if it is followed by a vowel. It is indeed the case that vowels that are the second letter of a word, except the <em>u<\/em>, are most often preceded by a normal\u00a0<em>s<\/em>. When a consonant comes in second place, they&#8217;re more often preceded by a\u00a0<em>sch<\/em>. Except the\u00a0<em>k<\/em>,\u00a0<em>p\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>t<\/em>. However, you might now say, the <em>sk <\/em>sound is a normal sound, while <em>sp <\/em>and <em>st <\/em>sound like <em>schp <\/em>and <em>scht<\/em>, respectively.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s the general rule!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>When a word starts with <em>st-<\/em>, it&#8217;s pronounced\u00a0<em>scht-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>When a word starts with\u00a0<em>sp-, <\/em>it&#8217;s pronounced <em>schp-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>When a word starts with\u00a0<em>sh-<\/em>,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>it&#8217;s pronounced\u00a0<em>sch- <\/em>(this is almost exclusively foreign words, such as\u00a0<em>der Shake, das Shopping<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>In all other cases when a word starts with\u00a0<em>s-<\/em>, it&#8217;s pronounced as a normal\u00a0<em>s<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can use this rule to figure out whether to write a word with\u00a0<em>s\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>sch<\/em> &#8211; just think about what letter comes right after.<\/p>\n<p>So that&#8217;s pretty straightforward! I am sad as well. But where&#8217;s the fun in language if you can&#8217;t ever make an exception, right?<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Exceptions<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>There are always exceptions, aren&#8217;t there?<\/p>\n<p>A common exception with language stuff generally are\u00a0<em>Fremdw\u00f6rter\u00a0<\/em>(n, foreign words).<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the\u00a0<em>sh<\/em>-rule that we saw above, the\u00a0<em>st\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>sp\u00a0<\/em>can sometimes also sound like a normal\u00a0<em>s<\/em>.
