Guten Tag! Whilst it\u2019s fairly easy to express yourself with yes and no in German, do you know how to say “I don’t mind”? How do you respond if someone presents a couple of options to you, and you don\u2019t mind either way which one is chosen? Alternatively, how do you let someone know \u2013 perhaps in a more heated conversation – that you really don\u2019t care<\/em> about what they\u2019re saying? Today we\u2019re going to look at different ways of saying \u201cI don\u2019t mind\u201d or \u201cI don\u2019t care\u201d in German. This post focuses on neutral\/polite phrases, whilst a follow-up post will focus on more heated or unusual expressions!<\/p>\n

Ways to say \u201cI don\u2019t mind\u201d or \u201cI don\u2019t care\u201d in German – neutral phrases<\/h2>\n

Note that all of these phrases could<\/em> still come across as rude if your tone of voice is so. By calling these ‘neutral’ phrases I simply mean the words in the phrases themselves aren’t offensive – there’s no swearing, for example.<\/p>\n

Das ist mir egal<\/strong> \u2013 I don\u2019t mind either way<\/h3>\n

This is probably the most common way of saying \u201cI don\u2019t mind\u201d in German. If you memorise just one of these phrases today, make it this one! It\u2019s very straight-forward and can be used in any situation.<\/p>\n

Egal<\/strong> \u2013 Either way\/doesn\u2019t matter<\/h3>\n

Alternatively, the phrase \u2018Das ist mir egal\u2019 sometimes gets shortened to just \u2018Egal\u2019. This is a very laid back, chilled out way of expressing you don\u2019t mind, but it’s still polite.<\/p>\n

Meinetwegen<\/strong> \u2013 I don\u2019t mind<\/h3>\n

Meinetwegen is one of those curious German words that has a few different meanings, depending on the context it\u2019s used in, but it is a way of saying \u201cI don\u2019t mind\u201d. You might simply reply \u201cMeinetwegen\u201d to mean \u201cOK, sure\u201d. Another way of using it is to say something like, \u201cMach dir meinetwegen keine Sorgen\u201d \u2013 \u201cDon\u2019t worry about me\u201d, when you want to make it clear that you\u2019re not fussed either way about the outcome of something. Note that – as with all of these phrases and words – meinetwegen can also sound blunt\/rude, depending on your tone of voice!<\/p>\n

Das k\u00fcmmert mich nicht<\/strong> \u2013 I don\u2019t care about that\/that doesn\u2019t concern me<\/h3>\n

This is a phrase that translates more to \u201cI don\u2019t care\u201d than \u201cI don\u2019t mind\u201d. You might use it to express that something is none of your business, or doesn\u2019t bother\/worry you. The verb k\u00fcmmern<\/em> means \u2018to concern yourself with\u2019 or \u2018to take care of\u2019.<\/p>\n

Das macht mir nichts aus<\/strong> \u2013 That makes no difference to me\/that\u2019s fine by me<\/h3>\n

This phrase can be used to express that something is fine, good to go ahead, etc., such as:<\/p>\n

Ich muss mein Auto f\u00fcr eine halbe Stunde hier lassen. Geht das?<\/em>
\nJa, das macht mir nichts aus.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I need to leave my car here for half an hour. Is that OK?<\/em>
\nYeah, that\u2019s fine by me.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Das ist mir gleichg\u00fcltig<\/strong> \u2013 It\u2019s all the same to me\/I don’t care<\/h3>\n

Gleichg\u00fcltig translates to \u2018indifferent\u2019, so saying \u2018Das ist mir gleichg\u00fcltig\u2019 means you have no real attachment to any of the options that\u2019ve been presented to you.<\/p>\n
