Some cities have started using it, the University of Leipzig decided to use the\u00a0<em>weibliche Form <\/em>(feminine form) as the basic form instead of the\u00a0<em>m\u00e4nnliche Form\u00a0<\/em>(male form). This led to some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deutschlandfunkkultur.de\/generisches-femininum-an-der-universitaet-leipzig-herr.976.de.html?dram:article_id=343071#:~:text=An%20der%20Universit%C3%A4t%20hat%20die,Grundordnung%20der%20Institution%20%E2%80%93%20den%20Vorrang.&amp;text=Die%20Uni%20Leipzig%20hatte%20bei,Form%20von%20Berufsbezeichnungen%20zu%20verwenden.\">&#8220;erhitzte Gem\u00fcter&#8221; (raised tempers)<\/a>. In Germany, the discussion about the use and necessity of gendered language is far from over. But that&#8217;s a topic for another day. Today, I want to discuss the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/gender-neutral-german-das-gendersternchen\/\"><em>Gendersternchen\u00a0<\/em>(gender asterisk). Click here to read the post we wrote about it if you don&#8217;t know what I mean<\/a>. So, for example, you could say\u00a0<em>Pilot*innen <\/em>(pilots). This includes <em>Piloten<\/em><em>, Pilotinnen <\/em>and others. There are alternative ways of doing this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Aufz\u00e4hlung <\/em>(counting) or\u00a0<em>Paarform\u00a0<\/em>(pair form):\u00a0<em>Richter und Richterinnen<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Schr\u00e4gstrich <\/em>(slash), also called <em>Splitting<\/em>: \u00a0<em>Richter\/innen<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Binnen-I <\/em>(inner I): <em>Richter<\/em><em>Innen<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Gender Gap<\/em>: <em>Richter<\/em><em>_innen<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>geschlechtsneutrale Pluralbildung\u00a0<\/em>(gender-neutral pluralization):\u00a0<em>Die Pilotierenden\u00a0<\/em>(&#8220;the piloting ones&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li>and finally, the <em>Gendersternchen<\/em>: <em>Richter<\/em><em>*innen<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Quite some options, and there may be more! Released: 2021.\",\"meta\":{\"year\":\"2021\",\"length_formatted\":\"0:02\"},\"image\":{\"src\":\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-includes\/images\/media\/audio.svg\",\"width\":48,\"height\":64},\"thumb\":{\"src\":\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/german\/wp-includes\/images\/media\/audio.svg\",\"width\":48,\"height\":64}}]}<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\t\n<p>Normally, a word like\u00a0<em>Richterinnen\u00a0<\/em>is spoken as one &#8211; the &#8211;<em>innen\u00a0<\/em>is fully integrated in the word and flows straight from\u00a0<em>Richter<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>RichterInnen <\/em>is different. You show that there is more than simply male and female <em>Richter<\/em> by leaving a little gap between <em>Richter <\/em>and <em>Innen<\/em>. Or rather, you say the two parts of the word separately. <em>Innen <\/em>does not flow from <em>Richter<\/em>, and instead <em>Richter <\/em>is said by itself, and <em>Innen <\/em>comes after to complete the word.\u00a0This is how you pronounce any of the gender-neutral plurals, so the\u00a0<em>Splitting, Gender Gap, Gendersternchen\u00a0<\/em>and <em>Binnen-I\u00a0<\/em>all have that same pronunciation!<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I find simply using the\u00a0<em>generisches Maskulin\u00a0<\/em>(generic masculine) plural, so the male form that encompasses any group, the easiest to use and the most straightforward. When it comes to the gender-neutral solutions, I find\u00a0<em>RichterInnen<\/em> the easiest to adapt &#8211; it is basically like the female plural, and you just make the i a capital letter. With German being full of capitals anyway, that one more letter won&#8217;t come in the way!<\/p>\n<p>Plus, it makes applications where other signs might look off a non-issue. Think about file naming on a computer. <em>Splitting<\/em>? Won&#8217;t work. The <em>Gendersternchen<\/em>? Nope. And the\u00a0<em>Gender Gap\u00a0<\/em>_ is used already as a space if multiple words need to form a single, long string of characters. Again, something that might occur with file naming.
