Guten Tag! Today we\u2019re going to learn the five senses \u2013 die f\u00fcnf Sinne \u2013 in German, as well as some related vocabulary. Let\u2019s get started!<\/p>\n

Die f\u00fcnf Sinne \u2013 The five senses<\/h2>\n

Here are what the five, basic human senses are called in German:<\/p>\n

HEARING: das Geh\u00f6r
\nSIGHT: das Sehen
\nTOUCH: der Tastsinn
\nTASTE: der Geschmack
\nSMELL: der Geruchssinn<\/p>\n

Usually when we talk about our senses on a day-to-day basis, we use the corresponding verbs to the above nouns \u2013\u2018Ich h\u00f6re nichts\u2019 (\u2018I don\u2019t hear anything\u2019) when someone asks you to listen out for a particular sound, for example. So, here are the corresponding verbs with some example sentences:<\/p>\n

Corresponding body part: das Ohr (ear)
\nCorresponding verb: h\u00f6ren (to hear)
\nIch kann dich nicht h\u00f6ren \u2013 I can\u2019t hear you<\/p>\n

SIGHT: das Sehen<\/strong><\/p>\n

Corresponding body part: das Auge (eye)
\nCorresponding verb: sehen (to see\/watch)
\nOhne Brille sehe ich nichts \u2013 I can\u2019t see anything without glasses<\/p>\n

TOUCH: der Tastsinn<\/strong><\/p>\n

Corresponding body part: die Haut (skin)
\nCorresponding verb: tasten (to feel for\/touch)
\nIch taste nach dem Lichtschalter \u2013 I feel around for the light switch
\nNote: This one is a little tricky. The verb tasten is not actually the best translation for the word \u2018touch\u2019! More accurate verbs are anfassen or ber\u00fchren. But the verb tasten, from Tastsinn, is more about specifically using your sense of touch \u2013 ie. feeling around for something in the dark.<\/p>\n

TASTE: der Geschmack<\/strong><\/p>\n

Corresponding body parts: der Mund (mouth) \/ die Zunge (tongue)
\nCorresponding verb: schmecken (to taste)
\nWie schmeckt es? – How does it taste?<\/p>\n

SMELL: der Geruchssinn<\/strong><\/p>\n

Corresponding body part: die Nase (nose)
\nCorresponding verb: riechen (to smell)
\nRiechst du das? – Can you smell that?<\/p>\n

How do you say you\u2019re hard of hearing, blind, or have no sense of smell? Here are a few words that will come in handy:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Blind \u2013 blind<\/p>\n

Short-sighted \u2013 kurzsichtig<\/p>\n

Long-sighted – weitsichtig<\/p>\n

Deaf \u2013 taub<\/p>\n

Hard of hearing \u2013 schwerh\u00f6rig<\/p>\n

Mute \u2013 stumm<\/p>\n

Deaf and mute – taubstumm<\/p>\n

Loss of sense of smell \u2013 der Geruchsverlust<\/p>\n

Loss of sense of taste \u2013 die Geschmacksst\u00f6rung<\/p>\n

<\/a>Loss of sense of touch \u2013 die Hyp\u00e4sthesie
\n(For example, you might lose your sense of: der Schmerz- pain, die Vibration- vibration, or die Temperatur- temperature)<\/p>\n

Other senses<\/h2>\n

Of course, human beings have other senses, too. Der Gleichgewichtsinn<\/em> is the sense of balance, for instance, and der sechste Sinn<\/em> is the famous \u2018sixth sense\u2019! I will write a separate post on the sechste Sinn,<\/em> where we will look at things like intuition, gut feelings, and psychic ability.<\/p>\n
