Guten Tag! This post is going to give you some German vocabulary for the following subjects: menstruation; contraception; and trying for a baby. I hope this will be useful for anyone in Germany who needs the vocabulary to communicate with a doctor, pharmacist, shop assistant, partner\/family member, or to navigate words in shops, online, or in leaflets!<\/p>\n

Die Menstruation – menstruation<\/h2>\n

Ich habe meine Periode<\/strong> \u2013 I have my period<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Another way of saying \u2018I have my period\u2019 in German is Ich habe meine Tage<\/strong> \u2013 \u2018I have my days\u2019. This is akin to saying \u2018it\u2019s my time of the month\u2019.<\/p>\n

You can get feminine Hygieneprodukte<\/strong> (hygiene products) in most Superm\u00e4rkte<\/strong> (supermarkets) and Drogerien<\/strong> (drug stores) in Germany. These include Rossmann, DM, Edeka, Aldi, Lidl, and M\u00fcller.<\/p>\n

die Damenbinden<\/strong> \u2013 sanitary towels
\ndie Tampons<\/strong> – tampons
\ndie Menstruationstasse<\/strong> \u2013 menstrual cup
\ndie Slipeinlagen<\/strong> \u2013 pantyliners<\/p>\n

Eine versp\u00e4tete Periode<\/strong> \u2013 A late period<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

If your period hasn\u2019t come yet and you think you might be schwanger<\/strong> (pregnant), you\u2019ll want to get yourself a pregnancy test \u2013 der Schwangerschaftstest<\/strong> in German. I can\u2019t insert a photo here, but if you search for Schwangerschaftstest<\/em><\/strong> on any German drug store\/supermarket website (there are a few listed above), you will see what they look like!<\/p>\n

Der Kinderwunsch<\/strong> \u2013 The desire for a baby, literally \u2018the baby wish\u2019<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Some Schwangerschaftsteste<\/strong><\/em> will say the word ‘Fr\u00fchtest’<\/strong> on them. This means \u2018early test\u2019. These tests are for people who are trying to get pregnant. It allows you to check for pregnancy before your period is due. Sometimes it will say ‘Schwangerschaftstest \u2013 Fr\u00fchtest’<\/em><\/strong> on the box, and other times it’ll just be one word – ‘Schwangerschaftsfr\u00fchtest’.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ich bin schwanger! –<\/strong> I\u2019m pregnant!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Another test that\u2019s available is an ovulation test \u2013 der Ovulationstest<\/strong> in German, so you can calculate the most fertile time in your cycle. Should you wish to track your Zyklus<\/strong> (cycle), you can use a Zyklusrechner<\/strong> (cycle calculator).<\/p>\n

Die Verh\u00fctung – Contraception<\/h2>\n

However, should you not want a baby, this section on contraception will be more useful for you! Here are the German names of various Verh\u00fctungsmethoden<\/strong> (methods of contraception) available at the Arzt<\/strong> (doctor):<\/p>\n

das Kondom <\/strong>\u2013 condom
\ndie Antibabypille<\/strong> \u2013 The contraceptive pill (literally \u2018anti-baby-pill\u2019, a humorous example of how German words often get straight to the point!)
\ndie Dreimonatsspritze<\/strong> \u2013 The injection (given every three months, hence \u2018drei Monat\u2019)
\ndas Hormonimplantat<\/strong> \u2013 The hormone implant
\ndas Diaphragma<\/strong> \u2013 The diaphragm<\/p>\n

If you want to visit a gynaecologist, these are called der Gyn\u00e4kologe<\/strong>, aka. der Frauenarzt<\/strong>. Be aware that the word Frauenarzt<\/strong><\/em> (lit \u2018women doctor\u2019) doesn\u2019t mean a female doctor, but rather a doctor specialising in women\u2019s health.<\/p>\n

Die Symptome – symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n

Finally, everyone\u2019s period symptoms are different, so it\u2019s important to be able to express how your period affects you- whether that\u2019s for the benefit of your doctor, or your partner\/family member. Here are some ways to express how your period affects you:<\/p>\n

Ich habe (schlimme) Regelschmerzen<\/strong> \u2013 I have (bad) period pains
\nIch habe Kopfweh<\/strong> \u2013 I have a headache
\nMir ist m\u00fcde<\/strong> \u2013 I am tired
\nIch bin traurig<\/strong> \u2013 I am sad
\nIch bin schwach<\/strong> \u2013 I feel faint
\nMeine Br\u00fcste tun weh<\/strong> \u2013 My breasts hurt
\nMein R\u00fccken tut weh <\/strong>– My back hurts
\nAlles nervt mich<\/strong> \u2013 Everything is irritating me<\/p>\n
