Guten Tag! In my last post, I gave you some vocabulary to describe where in the country you are, and what sort of place it is (you can read that post here!<\/a>). Following on from that post, I thought it’d be useful to include a selection of signs and notices you might come across when out and about in Germany – both the type you’d find somewhere st\u00e4dtisch<\/em> (urban), and the type you’d find somewhere l\u00e4ndlich<\/em> (rural).<\/p>\n

Note: I haven’t included the genders of the words as I usually do, because you don’t tend to see them on signs. If you’d like to learn more about German word genders in general, try this post<\/a>!<\/em><\/p>\n

German City And Countryside Signs<\/h1>\n

When you’re out exploring a city, town, or other urban area, here are some signs you might come across – some more common than others!<\/p>\n

Bahnhof<\/strong> – Train station<\/p>\n

Stadtmitte<\/strong> – City centre<\/p>\n

Parkplatz<\/strong> – Car park (also represented by a big P<\/strong> on a blue background)<\/p>\n

Toiletten<\/strong>\u00a0– Toilets<\/p>\n

U-Bahn<\/strong> – Underground train system (also represented by a big U <\/strong>on a blue background)<\/p>\n

S-Bahn<\/strong> – Suburban train system (also represented by a big S <\/strong>on a green background)<\/p>\n

Gleis<\/strong> – Platform (at a train station)<\/p>\n

Bushaltestelle<\/strong> – Bus stop (also represented by a big H <\/strong>on a yellow & green background)<\/p>\n

Ausgang<\/strong> – Exit<\/p>\n

Eingang<\/strong> – Entrance<\/p>\n

Einkaufszentrum<\/strong> – Shopping centre<\/p>\n

Radweg<\/strong> – Cycle lane<\/p>\n

Polizei<\/strong> – Police (police station)<\/p>\n

Schwimmbad<\/strong> – Swimming pool<\/p>\n

Now here are some less obvious, but nevertheless important, signs and notices you may spot:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stra\u00dfensperrung<\/strong> – Road closure<\/p>\n

Gesperrt<\/strong> – Closed<\/p>\n

Umleitung<\/strong> – Diversion<\/p>\n

Streik<\/strong> – Strike<\/p>\n

Maskenpflicht<\/strong> – Mask requirement (a very new, topical sign, obviously!)<\/p>\n

Mit Parkschein<\/strong> – With parking ticket (only those with a valid parking ticket may park here)<\/p>\n

Bewohner<\/strong> – Residents (only residents may park here)<\/p>\n

Stra\u00dfensch\u00e4den<\/strong> – Street damage<\/p>\n

Radwegsch\u00e4den<\/strong> – Cycle path damage<\/p>\n

Arguably more important than city signs – because you’re often out in the middle of nowhere, with no one to ask for help! – here are a selection of German words you may come across on signs when out hiking in the wilderness of Germany:<\/p>\n

Wanderweg<\/strong> \u2013 Walking path<\/p>\n

Hauptwanderweg<\/strong> \u2013 Main walking path<\/p>\n

Rundwanderweg<\/strong> \u2013 Round-trip walking path<\/p>\n

Halt!<\/strong> – Stop!<\/p>\n

Lebensgefahr<\/strong> \u2013 Danger of death<\/p>\n

Betreten auf eigene Gefahr<\/strong> – Enter at your own risk<\/p>\n

Privatgrundst\u00fcck<\/strong> – Private grounds\/area<\/p>\n

K\u00fcstenabbr\u00fcche<\/strong> \u2013 Coastal erosion\/unsteady cliff<\/p>\n

Achtung Loipe<\/strong> – Warning, cross-country ski slope (this may be accompanied by follow-up warnings, such as ‘Kein Fu\u00dfweg’ (No walking path), and ‘Die Loipe ist kein Wanderweg’ (This ski slope is not a hiking trail’)).<\/p>\n
