Guten Tag! Today\u2019s post is all about German library vocabulary. Did you know that Transparent Language Online<\/strong><\/a> is available in many libraries all around the world? Perhaps you\u2019re reading this post from a library right now! In this post we\u2019ll look at German vocabulary related to libraries, and I\u2019ll tell you a little about one of Germany’s most prominent libraries. Let\u2019s get started!<\/p>\n

The library: die Bibliothek\u2026 or is it die B\u00fccherei?<\/h3>\n

In German, you\u2019ll come across two words for library: die Bibliothek<\/strong> and die B\u00fccherei<\/strong>. These are used interchangeably, though Bibliothek<\/em> <\/strong>is more commonly used to refer to a larger library \u2013 for example, a research library (die Forschungsbibliothek<\/strong>), or a university library (die Universit\u00e4tsbibliothek<\/strong>), which ordinary members of the public would need a pass (der Pass<\/strong>) to get into.<\/p>\n

B\u00fccherei<\/em><\/strong>, on the other hand, normally refers to a smaller, community library that anyone can borrow books from. It is also sometimes called die \u00f6ffentliche Bibliothek<\/strong> in German \u2013 the public library.<\/p>\n

In Germany, a town or city\u2019s main library will usually have the word \u2018Stadt\u2019<\/strong> (town\/city) at the front of its name. Examples include Stadtb\u00fccherei Frankfurt <\/strong>and Stadtbibliothek Stuttgart.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here is a selection of vocabulary for things you will see in a library:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Librarian \u2013 der Bibliothekar (m), die Bibliothekarin (f)<\/p>\n

Book \u2013 das Buch<\/p>\n

Bookshelf \u2013 das B\u00fccherregal<\/p>\n

Reading place \u2013 der Leseplatz<\/p>\n

Workspace \u2013 der Arbeitsplatz<\/p>\n

Computer \u2013 der Computer<\/p>\n

Audio book \u2013 das H\u00f6rbuch<\/p>\n

Kids\u2019 library \u2013 die Kinderbibliothek<\/p>\n

Die Deutsche Nationalbibliothek<\/h3>\n

The German National Library (Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, or DNB for short) is arguably Germany\u2019s most important library. Located in both Frankfurt and Leipzig, this is where all German and German-language publications get collected and archived, and have been since 1913. All visitors to the DNB must have an account and a valid library card. People may also use the library\u2019s Leses\u00e4le<\/strong> (Reading Rooms) to work in by applying for the date they want to visit.<\/p>\n

Fun fact: There are approx. 36.1 million B\u00fccher<\/em><\/strong> in the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek!<\/p>\n
